August greetings! As I turn the calendar page to August, my summer also takes a turn. I expect that yours does too, or it will soon. It is time to turn toward preparation of the school and church year ahead.
In the first part of the summer, I enjoyed time with friends and family, and visited a partner church music school in Germany. I also enjoyed being with many of you at two of our regional conferences. I have heard of good presentations, music and worship at each of our conferences. I found the Region 1 event to be well-planned, smoothly executed, and exceedingly well attended. Last week the Region 3 event in River Forest, IL provided a wealth of hymn-singing, worship and inspiration to receptive participants. I am grateful for the collegiality of dedicated church musicians who take some of their precious summer days to come together to renew and make friendships, and to get some new ideas and music for the year ahead.
As your summer winds down and you return to your task of music-making, take a moment to give thanks for all that you have experienced this summer. A special thanks to all who planned and led our regional conferences. There is nothing like the joy of singing together as Lutheran church musicians.
Wishing you a good year ahead, Lorraine Brugh President |

ALCM Announces the 2013 Raabe Prize for Excellence in Sacred Composition
The Raabe Prize for Excellence in Sacred Composition is awarded every two years for a single musical work, published or unpublished and written within the last five years, that reflects a larger history of excellence on the part of the composer. While any sacred piece may be submitted, works that include the voice or voices are preferred over those for instruments alone. The composer need not be Lutheran. The $2,000 monetary award is shared equally by the winner and a musical or ecclesiastical organization chosen by the composer. The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2012. Additional information, including guidelines for submission, is available on the ALCM web site. |

The ALCM Web Site is Moving!
Well, we're not really moving off the Web or anything that drastic, but we are moving the site to a new platform (WordPress), which will give us much more flexibility and control. More information about the changes will be coming later this month. In the meantime, we're looking for photos to use on the site: people making music, worship spaces, instruments, etc. If you have photos to share, email them as attachments to office@alcm.org.

Share Your Thoughts
Have you been using some of the compositions or other materials posted in the Members Area of the ALCM web site? If so, why not send an email to the composer letting him/her know that you've been using it. Share your thoughts on how well it has worked for you or make suggestions on how it might be improved. This feedback can be very helpful to composers, especially if they hope to have the piece published. Email addresses are included in the annual directory sent to all ALCM members. An updated membership directory and new members for 2012 are posted under "ALCM Resources" in the Members Area of the web site.
Share Your Talents
Are you a composer? Why not check out the guidelines, write a great composition, and apply for the Raabe Prize? December 1 is the deadline for application. |
