It's February, and it's time to prepare for the move to Ash Wednesday and Lent later this month. My comments this month, though, are a look back at the Board of Directors meeting. I hope you find this brief summary of our work useful. As always, the Board and I welcome your comments and questions.
On January 16-17 the ALCM Board of Directors met in Valparaiso for a face-to-face meeting. Despite travel difficulties, we find it invaluable to meet together in real time to discuss the work and vision of ALCM. Here are a few of the highlights of our meeting:
- The board approved the 2012 budget of $247,653.60
- The board approved the 2013 National Conference budget as presented
- Regional conferences for 2012 will offer variety of formats and locations
- We approved the idea of multi-year development planning for national and regional conferences, allowing us to take advantage of discounts and ease planning decisions
- We discussed new forms of advertising, including more extensive web advertising, and will look at advertising packages at a later meeting
- The board authorized the payment of $100 to 3 graphic designers to solicit initial ideas for a new ALCM logo.
- We approved the purchase of a new computer for the ALCM office.
There is much more discussion and planning that went on, as well as the time for worship and community-building. This continues to be a rich time together, gathering on behalf of all the ALCM membership.

Lutheran Summer Music
Young Musicians Partnership
Lutheran Summer Music Academy is searching the country for talented young vocal and instrumental musicians who serve in your congregations to join them for the 2012 Lutheran Summer Music Academy & Festival (LSM)
Can you help?
Many of us had key mentors who were central to the exploration and expansion of our musical skills when we were young. Your encouragement of students to attend LSM this summer provides not only a way to acknowledge a student's musical potential, but provides them with extra scholarship dollars as well. By using the exclusive ALCM12 application promo code, your student DOUBLES the Early Application Discount. That can total up to $400 in initial scholarships.
JOIN the Young Musicians Partnership (YMP), a program for congregations who establish local scholarships, which has grown to over 100 congregations across the country. Click here for more information, a full list of active YMP congregations and to enroll online. You need only to establish a local scholarship for your member youth to attend Lutheran Summer Music.
All students of enrolled YMP congregations receive:
- 10% Tuition discount
- 33% Match to local funds
- Marketing and music resources for events& fundraising
Additional information is available on the LSM web site or you may contact Sue Olstad at solstad@lutheransummermusic.org or by phone at 888-635-6583.

Choral Titles Wanted!
What are your favorite "tried and true" Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany choral pieces? CrossAccent Music Review Editor Dr. Jean Boehler will be presenting choral reading workshops "ALCM Mixed Choir Choral Favorites" and "ALCM Children and Youth Choral Favorites" at the Region 1 Conference, "God Made Manifest: Liturgy, Song, Life" held June 27-29, 2012 in Bethlehem, PA. All members are encouraged to share titles of their all-time-favorite SATB, SAB, 2-pt, unison, and children's choir literature for the Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany seasons. Newly published literature or chestnuts that have withstood the test of time are welcome! It is hoped that a variety of styles and difficulty levels will be represented which reflect the diversity of our ALCM membership. When submitting your choral favorites, please include title, author, publisher, and octavo number, as well as your name, title, and the congregation which you serve. A comprehensive list will be distributed to all workshop participants and later posted on the web site. Please email titles to jeanboehler@gmail.com. Region 1 thanks you for your for help and looks forward to seeing you in Bethlehem next summer! |
