2012/2013 general slide
Greetings!

The theatre is extremely quiet this week. Jeremy Hutton, our Artistic Director, is still away working with Shakespeare By The Sea; Doug Floyd, our General Manager, is visiting our good friend Woody Harrelson in New York; and our theatre seats are still off being reupholstered! Despite their abscence we are still very busy behind the scenes preparing for our upcoming season!

In this issue we take a look back at past Hart House Theatre productions of Romeo and Juliet and we have a fantastic ticket giveaway from our friends at the Sony Centre!

Romeo and Juliet:

Juliet Through The Years

We're extrememly excited to be producing Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as part of our upcoming season. What many of you may not know, is this will actually be Hart House Theatre's third time presenting this seminal work on our historic stage.

The very first production of Romeo and Juliet at Hart House happened way back in 1948. Charmion King, who had just played Joan in George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan to great critical acclaim, was cast as Juliet.

Ms. King's season at Hart House Theatre was the start of what would be a tremendous career in Canadian Theatre. She was the driving force behind several Canadian theatre companies, including the Straw Hat Players and the Crest Theatre. Ms. King spent several seasons at the Stratford Shakespeare Company, appearing in The Winter's Tale, Three Sisters and Uncle Vanya, among others. She would go on to appear on Broadway, directed by Tyrone Guthrie in Robertson Davies' Lost and Libel. She also originated the role of Jessica Logan in David French's Jitters at the Tarragon Theatre in 1979 and reprised the role in the 1986 revival.

Ms. King met her husband of 44 years, Canadian legend Gordon Pinsent, in 1962 when they both appeared in a production at the Crest Theatre. They had one daughter, Canadian television actress Leah Pinsent. Ms. King and her daughter appeared in the 1998 production of Emphysema together at Tarragon Theatre. She died in 2007 from complications of emphysema.

Romeo and Juliet was again produced at Hart House Theatre as part of our 2005-2006 season. This production featured Bethany Jillard, a former University of Toronto student, as Juliet.

Bethany is currently in her third season at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. This season she is appearing as Hero in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and Catherine in Henry Vto critical acclaim. In past seasons she has played Lady Anne in Richard III and Cecil Volanges in Dangerous Liaisons.

Previous credits include: Rachel Corrie in My Name Rachel Corrie(Theatre Panik), a highly controversial play that we will be producing this season; How It Works (Tarragon Theatre); That Face (Nightwood Theatre/Canadian Stage); Tough! (Factory Theatre); and numerous productions with Driftwood Theatre Group. She has also appeared in the popular Canadian television shows Murdoch Mysteries (Shaftesbury), Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures (TMN/Shaftesbury) and Rookie Blue (ABC/Global).

We have yet to cast our next Juliet, but she certainly will have big shoes to fill. Hopefully she will follow in the footsteps of Juliets before her to go on to an amazing career in the Canadian theatre world!
