2012/2013 general slide
Greetings!

There are some major improvements being made to the theatre this summer! We are having our seats reupholstered and restuffed and last week we started the process by taking out all the seats. What a production! We thought you might enjoy seeing some before and after shots of the seats being taken out. Check out our photo essay in Under Construction. We can't wait to show you the made-over seats in late August!

We've been talking a lot about Matthew Gorman, who will be directing the first show of our upcoming season Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, in our past few newsletters. We have been reading great things about his current production, Like A Dog, at the Toronto Fringe Festival. Matthew wrote and is directing the play, which stars Peter Wylde. Like A Dog is playing at the Robert Gill Theatre until Saturday, July 14, 2012 and we encourage you to go see this thought-provoking new show.

In this issue we catch up with one of our recent alumni and we have a fantastic ticket giveaway from our friends at Dancap for one lucky reader!

Andre Sills
For Hart House Theatre - Richard III

Andre Sills has had a busy spring appearing in two back to back productions for Soulpepper Theatre Company. He joined an all-star cast in Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's Pulitzer-Prize winning dramatic comedy You Can't Take It With You and played Alfred in David Storey's Home, which The Toronto Star declared a "Home run".

We were lucky enough to have Andre play Richard, Duke of Gloucester in our 2010 production of Shakespeare's Richard III. He has also wowed Toronto audiences as part of Obsidian Theatre Company's 2011 production of Lynn Nottage's heartbreaking and captivating Ruined, as well as in such productions as The Overwhelming (Studio 180/Canadian Stage), As You Like It and The Taming Of The Shrew (Theatre By The Bay), Much Ado About Nothing (Canadian Stage), and Othello and Radio Golf (St. Louis Black Repertory).

Andre grew up in Markham and trained at George Brown Theatre School. Shortly after graduating, he joined The Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre at The Stratford Shakespeare Festival. He spent four seasons in Stratford appearing in Macbeth, Julius Caesar, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Love's Labour Lost, Caesar and Cleopatra, Henry IV: Part 1, The Duchess of Malfi and Pentecost at the prestigious festival.

This fall Andre will take on the lead role of George in Lynn Nottage's Intimate Apparel for Alberta Theatre Projects. It's the story of Esther, a plain, single, black woman who is 35 years old and lives alone in New York City in 1905. She carries on a courtship by correspondence with a Barbadian named George, who moves to New York city to marry her.

Following that, Andre returns to Toronto to work with Obsidian Theatre on Shakespeare's Nigga as part of their Development Series.
