Magic Shows Us That Magic Can Happen!

When Sheriff Deputies brought this dejected poodle to us, he was so severely matted that his fur was pulling and ripping his skin. He was caked in feces, mud, urine and debris. His coat was so long, matted and corded we immediately knew this poodle had been neglected for years. He was beginning to shut down. Lethargic and in pain. Tragically, the worst was yet to be discovered ... from his shoulders down to his tail, he was infested with maggots. Most would give up on this pitiful boy. But his spirit stole our hearts and we're doing all we can to give him love, happiness, and human kindness. Something he may never have known before. Considering his circumstances... we named him Magic.

$2,500 Reward Offered For Information Regarding Wilbur

In spite of heroic efforts made by Appalachian Animal Hospital veterinarians, Asheville Humane Society, Asheville Animal Services, and a good Samaritan, Wilbur lost his fight to stay alive. Veterinarians and medical assistants worked for more than five hours to save the 2-month-old baby goat who was found inside a plastic trash bag dumped in a construction dumpster in West Asheville two weeks ago.

"We so appreciate everyone who was rooting for Wilbur. Animal lovers throughout our community are mourning the loss of this sweet boy," said Katherine Shenar, President/CEO of Asheville Humane Society. "We are outraged and saddened by this senseless act of animal cruelty. Asheville Humane Society and the City of Asheville Police Department are working collaboratively on the investigation. Anonymous donors have stepped forward with $2,500 for a reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Wilbur's death."

Fete des Animaux a Suceess!  French Language Group of Asheville Enjoys Evening at Asheville Humane Society

More than 50 people from several French language groups in Asheville enjoyed an evening that celebrated animals.  "Festival des Animaux" was the first-ever event at Asheville Humane Society that brought together French food, French wine and a brief survey of several animals with French connections.  Sponsors from the Asheville area generously donated food and wine to make the evening a success!

Asheville Humane Society President/CEO Katherine Shenar presented a short history not only of dogs and cats that had their origins in France but also several that had unlikely connections including the poodle.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Merry and Ryck Caplan who spearheaded the event and organized the evening which also included the sale of paintings and photographs benefitting Asheville Humane Society.  Owners of The Sweet Biscuit Inn, Christian and Claudia Hickel, made crepes for everyone throughout the evening.

SPECIAL PETS FOR SPECIAL PEOPLE!

We are seeking someone special and it could be you!

Thanks to generous donors, compassionate foster parents, and dedicated staff, we're able to save lives of special needs animals. These pets might require mobility assistance, extra medicines, or a home without children or other pets. They might be elderly, handicapped, or suffer from a chronic health condition. Some may simply be harder to re-home. Although these pets may take more time, attention, or care, we know they're worth it.

Oliver This is Oliver who was adopted by a man who didn't mind that Oliver only has one eye.

These pets deserve a special someone to love them. Meet them on our website.

If you're willing to open your heart and home to one of our special needs pets, please contact our Adoption Center Manager Pam Burgess at [email protected].

Help A Special Needs Pet

If you can't adopt a special needs pet but want to help with their care, please make a donation to our Special Pets For Special People fund. Your donation enables us to go above and beyond for those animals who need much more than a second chance. Please consider setting up a one-time or recurring donation to help these dogs and cats get the second, third or fourth chance they deserve!

Kids Cookie Crew Saves the Day with Tasty Treats

Asheville Humane Society's newly formed Kids Cookie Crew decorated their first batch of cookies that were donated by Woof Gang Bakery at a recent adoption event.  Decorating cookies is almost as much fun as eating them but these cookies are extra special.

Made from all-natural, dog-friendly ingredients, these cookies are a tasty treat for your pooch.

The Cookie Crew will decorate a cookie for $1 and either give it to you for your pooch or will take it back to our Adoption and Education Center for the dogs still waiting for their forever home.

Thanks so much to Woof Gang Bakery in Biltmore Park for their help as we launched this fun new program for our junior volunteers.  For more information about becoming a junior volunteer or about joining the Cookie Crew, contact Heather Brannan at [email protected].

Happy Tails & Love Connections: We LOVE These Love Stories!

About Polo

Polo and his brother Marco came to us after their owner could no longer care for them.  Each kitten weighed a little more than one pound.  The brothers also needed some time in foster care to grow and gain some strength.  Once Polo was ready, he came to the adoption center where the Bostic family fell in love with his great looks and personality!

About Martha

Martha was found wandering near Leicester Highway in Asheville by animal control officers.  This  beauty was considered a SENIOR dog simply because she's over the age of five (Martha is SIX).  Luckily, Ronnie Gillespie saw her playfulness and youthful spirit rather than her age and Martha and Ronnie lived happily ever after!

About Wyeth and Watermelon

Leonardo Jackson came in looking for a companion animal and instead, came out with not one, but TWO, adorable pets.  Wyeth and Watermelon, brother and sister, were two of four kitty siblings brought to the shelter as strays.  Once they received all of their vaccinations and put on a little weight, they were ready to go to their forever home.  Congratulations to Mr. Jackson, Wyeth and Watermelon!

Top Tips for Travelling with Your Dog

Driving on the Open Road with Fido!

1. Bring your dog to your veterinarian before traveling to ensure they are up to date with their vaccinations and have no pre-existing illnesses. Your vet can recommend medication for anxiety or motion sickness if necessary.

2. Practice sitting in the car with your dog, both when the car is in the driveway and also for short trips to help them adjust.

3. Stock up on food and water before setting off - it may be difficult to find their normal food at a rest stop.

4. Make them comfortable by bringing their usual bed or blanket to settle down into but also ensure they are safely secured with a seat belt.

5. Feed your dog at least two hours prior to the trip to reduce the chance of motion sickness

6. Keep the car well-ventilated when travelling and use air conditioning where possible.

7. Make regular bathroom and walk breaks - once every two hours is recommended.

8. Never let your dog put its head out of the window as it can lead to eye injuries.

9. If you're travelling with small children, make sure they don't annoy or tease your dog.

10. Ensure your dog is micro-chipped before going on holiday to minimize the chance of losing your dog in an unfamiliar environment.

We Love our LITTER LOVERS!

"Litter Lovers" sponsorship underwrites the expense of kitty litter for a month at Asheville Humane Society. For $250 a month, sponsors, either businesses or individuals, will receive prominent in-lobby signage and website placement. If you'd like to be a Litter Lover of the Month, please contact Meghan Jordan at [email protected].

LOVE IN A CAN Means Full Tummies for the Puppies and Kitties!

"Love in a Can" continues to be a success and we are so thankful to our sponsors!

We purchase canned cat and dog food to help stimulate the appetite of those animals who are sick, injured, stressed or simply lonely. This affordable monthly sponsorship of $250 to cover this cost celebrates the love we have for those special needs animals requiring a little nudge to keep their spirits high as they await their forever homes.

Sponsorship of this program is only $250 each month and it helps make a big difference in the lives of the animals in our care! Contact Meghan Jordan at [email protected] if you would like to become a sponsor.

Kittens are Coming Back from Foster at the End of the Summer!

katherineAs we approach the end of summer with Labor Day just a few days away, kitten season continues unabated. With more than 100 kittens in foster care at the moment, we are thankful for all of our volunteers who have stepped up to care for these most vulnerable animals. Cats and kittens are arriving back almost daily from foster homes so that they can be adopted and that there is more room in foster homes for new arrivals.

This cycle of homeless animals arriving at the shelter, moving to foster care, and then moving to Asheville Humane Society for adoption is ongoing and seems to speed up as the summer winds down. We have reduced our adoption fees, implemented "name your own price" for adult cats, offered a "adopt one kitten, get one free" program and even run frequent specials such as "$9 Black Panther Ninjas" for those hard-to-adopt black cats. Some months we even offer "$5 Felines" and still, the Buncombe County Animal Shelter, Asheville Humane Society's foster homes and the Adoption and Education Center are filled to the brim with cats and kittens.

We are not alone in this. All of the other area rescue agencies in the Buncombe County area are experience this same influx of cats and kittens that shows no sign yet of slowing down.

So many of these cuties come to us as neonates (6 weeks old or younger) and we depend heavily on our foster homes to give them time to grow and put on a little weight. Fortunately, we have been able to save every healthy, adoptable cat or kitten that arrives on our doorstep simply because of our network of 215 foster family homes.

You might think that I'm exaggerating the problem of kitten season but our numbers tell the story -- a story of animals that are not being spayed or neutered, a story of the lifesaving efforts of our foster families and a story of hope that we can continue these efforts by inviting you to become one of our foster families. Please contact Skye Kroman our Foster Care Coordinator at [email protected] to learn more or complete a foster application online.

And please remember -- spay or neuter your pet!

For the animals,
