HAILEY STEALS OUR HEARTS
 | |
Hailey, in spite of her injury, has a loving disposition and gentle nature.
|
This sweet little girl is Hailey. She came to us the other day after her owner
surrendered her to the Buncombe County Animal Shelter. He said he could no longer
afford to care for her or to pay for her broken leg. We took one look into her soft,
brown eyes and promised that we would do all we could to mend her broken heart and fractured femur. We have to walk her with a medical sling so she doesn't place any
weight on her broken leg.
Fortunately, our partners at AB Tech Veterinary program were able to give Hailey
a thorough examination and take X-Rays. Her prognosis is good but her recuperation
will take some time. She will need a pin inserted into her thigh bone which normally
isn't a problem, but since she is just 4 ½ months old, her growth plates could prove
problematic (the section of the bone that actually grows). She is currently in foster
care with Jennifer Brehler, our Director of Operations, and is recovering from her
surgery.

Animals come to us every day with sad or tragic stories like Hailey's and our goal is to
help as many of them as we can. Sometimes surgery or medication is enough to get
them on their way to a brighter future and with your help, we can transform the lives
of these sick or injured animals. Please consider giving to the Lily-Grace Fund, our
lifesaving program that helps animals like Hailey.

FIRST-EVER TRIVIA NIGHT RAISES $18,000 FOR OUR FOSTER CARE PROGRAM! |
|
We held our first-ever Trivia Night on Saturday, March 10 at the Crowne Plaza Resort and it was a huge success! Over 350 people enjoyed numerous rounds of a hotly contested trivia competition, as well as other fun games, a mystery wine auction, a silent auction, and a pizza buffet. Foster animals were on hand to get many "oohs" and "ahhs," and trivia and contest winners collected some cool cash prizes. Most importantly, we raised $18,000 to support our vital foster program! Thanks to everyone who came (we had three tables of volunteers), and to all volunteers, staff, committee and board members who helped make Trivia Night successful.
 | | Every one of the animals that we brought to Trivia Night found a foster home that very evening. Talk about a successful event! |
 | |
The staff of Animal Hospital of North Asheville put their thinking caps (and bunny ears!) on for a good cause.

About Spindale
We adopted Spindale last August. We had been looking for our canine soulmate for a few months now and just couldn't seem to find the perfect fit. When we met Spindale, he was laying in a perfect circle in the corner of his kennel. After only moments together, I realized what a little piece of perfection he was. We decided to give it a night to think about it. That night, I had a dream about him. The next day, we went and picked him up. His brother adopted us in December. They are now the highlight of my day. Thank you Asheville Humane Society.
About Abby
Jeff and wife Johna Rogovin recently moved to Asheville from Minnesota and had lost two of their longtime pets just before moving. Johna is an active member of our fundraising efforts at Asheville Humane and knew they would eventually adopt a fur-ever friend from us! It turned out to be sooner than later and Honey (now Abby) stole their hearts on a recent visit to the adoption center. Abby, a golden/rough collie mix is a five-month-old ball of energy and was featured in a story for WLOS-TV her first day in her new home! Congratulations to the Rogovin family!
Petey and Tweety
Amy Scott Fuller has an update on the parakeets she recently adopted. They are doing very well. I have renamed them Tweety and Petey. They are lovely little babies. I love to just sit and listen to them chirp back and forth between each other. Thank you so much for allowing me to have them. If for any reason you come across more parakeets or birds in general I would be more than happy to invite them in my home.

From Donald Ackerman
I adopted Tarzan about 1.5 months ago, he has settled in great and getting fatter by the day! He's a water lover who will get in the shower with you! I'm back today to adopt a playmate for him:) Congratulations and we hope to see you soon!

| We Love our LITTER LOVERS! |
Even the animals give back when they can! Thanks to Hamish and Esme who were recently adopted by Tom and Maria Vadeboncoeur, the kitties still waiting to be adopted will have all of their kitty litter sponsored by these two lucky cats!
"Litter Lovers" sponsorship underwrites the expense of kitty litter for a month at Asheville Humane Society. For $250 a month, sponsors, either businesses or individuals, will receive prominent in-lobby signage and website placement. If you'd like to be a Litter Lover of the Month, please contact Meghan Jordan at mjordan@ashevillehumane.org.

| LOVE IN A CAN Means Full Tummies for the Puppies and Kitties! |
|
"Love in a Can" continues to be a success and we are so thankful to our sponsors!
We purchase canned cat and dog food to help stimulate the appetite of those animals who are sick, injured, stressed or simply lonely. This affordable monthly sponsorship of $250 to cover this cost celebrates the love we have for those special needs animals requiring a little nudge to keep their spirits high as they await their forever homes.
If you, or a business you know, would like information about becoming a monthly food sponsor, please contact Holly Vestal at spottedbluecats@gmail.com.
Sponsorship of this program is only $250 each month and it helps make a big difference in the lives of the animals in our care!

Touch the Hearts of the Mothers in Your Life with a Special Gift |
Give the perfect gift this Mothers Day with a gift to mothering!
What the world needs now is love sweet love! Let's face it - most of us have too much stuff. And a place where sweet love is abundant is the Foster Family program of Asheville Humane Society.
For each $25 donation this Mothers Day to the Asheville Humane Society Foster Program, we will send a lovely certificate to your mom or any great woman you are honoring. You can honor aunts, grandmothers and just great moms of two or four legged kids. The more women you honor, the more animals you help!
In addition to the certificate, the names of all the 2012 Mothers Day honorees will be listed on our website until June 8 and recognized in our next edition of PawPrints, our quarterly newsletter.
Who are the animals in our foster program? Homeless mama cats and newborn kittens. Abandoned puppies too young and helpless to be put up for adoption. Injured and sick animals who need nursing. Frightened and traumatized animals who will be loved back to emotional health. Animals who need a temporary "mom" to make it.
Volunteer foster moms and families supply the gentle hands, time and care to make these animals adoptable: Asheville Humane Society covers vet bills, food and medicine. Last year 1,059 lives were saved thanks to our foster families.
This Mothers Day, honor the mothers in your life with a gift to help the motherless. Click here to make your donation or call Susan at our Administration Office at (828) 761-2001 x 310.

| At-Risk Animals Include Mothers and Mother's-To-Be |

Mother's Day is a day to recognize the unique accomplishments of mothers everywhere and to honor all of the mothers in our lives. As we care for thousands of animals, some of which are already mothers or mothers-to-be, the enormity of the homeless pet population hits us with force. Any pregnant, or nursing, cat or dog is considered "at-risk" and as such, takes a significant number of resources to ensure a happy and healthy life for both mother and babies. I say babies because nine times out of ten, our four-legged friends arrive with multiple off-spring.
Because of the sheer number of mothers and babies here at our facility, we depend heavily on our network of foster parents. Sometimes our foster volunteers will hand feed the babies every hour on the hour, day after day, knowing that one or more of them may die because they were born too soon or too sick. And foster volunteers still come back to help again with another litter because they know how much we need them! Talk about dedication!
As Mothers Day approaches, please remember that spaying or neutering your animal is the best solution to keeping your animal out of this group of at-risk animals. And celebrate the fact that each animal that is spayed or neutered is one less animal that is contributing to the pet overpopulation in our community. As we prepare to honor the mothers in our lives for Mother's Day, please consider becoming a Foster Mother volunteer. I can personally attest to the emotional gratification and feeling of accomplishment of being a lifesaving volunteer. Each Spring my husband and I prepare to foster several litters of newborn kittens and nursing mothers to do our part to help save lives. Please join me and my husband this year as we get ready for the influx of mothers and babies who need us. It's easy to become a foster parent - just click here and sign up today!
