Fosterpalooza is set for Saturday, January 28!

YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE INVITED TO

FOSTERPALOOZA 2012!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 28 for a fun event for the whole family: hot chocolate, cider, puppies, kitties and a special area for kids to make toys for the shelter animals!

Vail now Iris with her new Mom

Eight-year-old Vail came to Asheville Humane Society as a sick, injured kitty that needed some recuperation before finding her forever home.  Vail was also deaf.  How did she overcome so many challenges before she was able to be adopted?  Thanks to the tender, loving care of one of our amazing foster parent and AHS staff member Rachael Callahan, Vail received all the time she needed for her chance at a bright, happy future with her new mother, Wendy Haner.

Each year, animals too young for adoption come into our care. Since we are the safety net for all homeless animals in Buncombe County, we're here to catch them through our life-saving foster care program.

In 2011, we placed more than 1,000 animals into foster care with our volunteer foster parents. And in the past year, we have nearly doubled our number of foster families! We know we can save even more lives in 2012 by increasing our number of trained and dedicated foster families. Being a foster parent can be one of the most rewarding ways to volunteer and help save lives.

And it's an activity the whole family can enjoy!

Animals placed into foster care include puppies or kittens still too young for adoption, animals with injuries or illness requiring recuperative care, and those cats and dogs that may need a few days of vacation from the Adoption Center until they find their forever home.

It's the middle of winter but we know that spring will bring newborn animals to us and we want to be ready! Follow us on Twitter, Facebook or on our website to learn more!

Year-End Animal Adoptions Gone Wild!

Cats and Dogs and Ferrets, Oh My!

Holiday adoptions total 178 in just four days!

We were able to adopt out a record number of animals in just four days -- 178!

Not only were we able to find homes for all of these animals but we also had potential adopters lined up at our door HOURS before we opened on each of the two holiday weekends -- Christmas and New Year's.  Excited kids and parents came from around the corner and from out of state all to find the perfect addition to their family -- a loving, cuddly kitty or puppy or rabbit or ferret!

Thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who worked to change the lives of these animals by finding them a home for life!

Samantha Grant found Daniel  and brought him to his new home on Christmas Eve.  Looks like a happily-ever-after story to us!

Bill and Gloria Allen adopted Autumn who quickly became Zoe Rose.  The Allens mentioned to their friend Ann Lewis that they were ready for another dog and it had to be a Bearded Collie or a mix, it had to be young but not a puppy, it had to be female and it had to come from Asheville Humane Society.  Lo and behold, there was Zoe Rose just waiting for the Allens to take her home!

Bonbon, a green-eyed beauty, was thrilled when Violet Hano came to pick her

up and take her home just in time for the new year!  What a great way to start 2012!

These two kitties were so excited that they gave each other a sweet kiss before heading out to their new home!  Another happy family courtesy of Asheville Humane Society.

Happy Tail From Jamie Zane:

We wanted to send an update on our newly adopted puppy. Her name was Asia when we brought her home through the foster-to-adopt program. We quickly renamed her to Maggie. She is doing so well in her new home and we couldn't love her more!

It seemed like fate when I first met Maggie. She was out with her previous foster

parents and I was instantly drawn to her. There was something about this little puppy

that reminded me of my recently deceased grandmother. My grandmother and I were very close and she always raised boxer puppies. Maggie is a mix of boxer and ?? (whatever it is, she's perfect).

So I went home and talked it over with my husband over the course of a few nights. As soon as he met Maggie in person, he was in love, too - and the rest is history!

We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped bring Maggie into our home. She just had her veterinary check-up and final round of shots. Her stitches from the spaying are healing well and she's totally full of energy and affection.

It's a New Year for You and Fido to Get Fit!

Have you had too much holiday cheer?   Is Fido feeling the same way?  Maybe a few too many pupperoni treats?  Are you ready to get off the couch and get out into the great outdoors?  Here are some resolutions for you and your pet to get healthy in the new year:

  • Take your dog for more walks and exercise - after all, it is good for both of you!
  •

  • Take your dog for a yearly physical examination.
  •

  • Put your pet on a weight-reduction program, especially if he or she has enjoyed the holiday season as much as you have!
  •

  • Make sure your pet's microchip information is current and registered, and
  • that he or she wears other forms of identification at all times.

  • Brush your dog's coat and teeth regularly. If more help is needed with
  • teeth or your dog is middle-aged or older, maybe schedule a cleaning.

  • Practice effective flea and heartworm control all year long to keep your pet
  • safe from preventable disease.

  • Start training again or resolve to take him or her to a class. Even if your
  • pet isn't unruly, training keeps you both sharp and engaged.

  • Reassess your home, making sure the environment is safe for pets. Cover electrical cords, remove potential toxins (such as Gorilla Glue) and plants, and
  • know the location and telephone number of your closest emergency hospital.

  • Buckle up your dog in the car. Unrestrained pets are dangerous to both to you and your dog. Use a pet harness, doggy-designed car seat or travel crate to keep them safe.
  •

  • Take the time daily to appreciate your pups; they do so much for you
  • and ask little in return.

We recently launched our newest sponsorship opportunity called "Love in a Can." Many of our puppies and kitties need a treat or a few extra calories and canned food is the best way to give them what they need.

Many thanks to our friends at Fox Dental Associates who are sponsoring food for the animals for the month of January!  If you, or a business you know, would like information about becoming a monthly food sponsor, please contact Holly Vestal at spottedbluecats@gmail.com.

Sponsorship of this program is only $200 each month and it helps make a big difference in the lives of the animals in our care!

"It's Not About Me.  It's About We."
    Katherine and Olivier
I came across this quote recently and realized that it encompasses all that we do here for homeless animals in Buncombe County.  Our work to end animal homelessness is not the job of a single person; it's about WE and what WE can accomplish together.

As the new year begins, we look forward to the many events and happenings here at Asheville Humane Society, including our second annual Foster-palooza at the end of the month.  We want to grow the number of foster families in our program and invite you to become part of one of the most caring networks of people in the area.   Our current foster program includes more than 200 families who care for sick or injured animals until they find their forever home.  It is our hope that we can increase that number by 50% in 2012.

We are the safety net for thousands of animals that come through our doors each year.  We do not turn away any animal who needs our help.  We offer hope to those animals who need a second chance at a happy future.

Our recent adoption events that closed out 2011 were a great example of how we all work together to save as many animals as possible.  Dozens and dozens of volunteers turned out to help, staff members put in extra hours, WLOS came not once, but twice, to publicize the events and the result was nothing short of phenomenal!  During this holiday season, we were able to adopt out over 300 animals to loving homes!

It's not about me.  It's about we. But we can't do it without YOU! Join us this month and become a life-saving foster parent for Asheville Humane Society. We hope to see you on Saturday, January 28th at Fosterpalooza. Watch our website for more details: www.ashevillehumane.org or follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Happy New Year!
