thanksgivingNovember 2011
There is so much for which to be thankful. Reflection from time to time is humbling and I am truly grateful for all the blessings in my life.  I count each and every one of my clients as a personal blessing and I love all of you. I hope, during this season of thanks giving that you find your cornucopia overflowing with abundance.

Here's some sad news with a glad ending: some of my favorite topical analgesics have become extinct.  The Arbonne BioNutria Muscle Gel has not been in production for quite a few years and I recently sold the last 8 tubes of this.  My all-time favorite to recommend to my clients for the longest lasting pain relief --- Alivia is also no longer being produced.  I just sold my last 2 tubes of this and went to the website to re-order only to find it a dead site and the phone number has been disconnected.  Further investigation disclosed that Aliva has been out of business for over a year. Not to worry.... The good part about all of this is I am in the process of blending a topical analgesic for my massage practice.  Give me a couple months to perfect the solution and ratio of essential oils.  I promise, it will be every bit as effective as the two products I used to have available for all my clients.  Just stay-tuned as I am in the process of sourcing the ingredients and testing my blend before offering it to all of you.

I have taken on an added "chore" of writing an article a week (but it takes me longer than a week to accomplish this) for the purpose of helping my website obtain more recognition.  I don't understand all the techie stuff about it...I'm just trying to comply with my end of the work.  In doing so, I discovered that it is not a best practice to also post my articles to my website.  I was feeling a tad cheated about not being able to utilize all the time and effort I have spent on the three articles I have already written.  Then I had an epiphany of sorts.... I can include my articles in my newsletter!  (and this was decided that it would be ok to do so) Ergo....I have a new category in my newsletter: Beau's Massage Articles
This month, I wrote about Hot Stone Massage Therapies.  Just scroll down until you find it here in this newsletter.  I hope you enjoy reading it and are inspired to give your body what it craves. "Massage.  It does a body good!"

I have some newly arrived aromatherapy items.  Incense.  All of them are for meditation purposes but I am sure it is perfectly acceptable to use them for room fresheners too! I am happy to announce that I have a wonderful selection from Atmosphere Natural Incense.  I chose exotic blends designed for the meditation enhancement.  The six fragrances are:  Dream Catcher (white sage/Copal), Earth Spirit(amber/Balsam), Kama Sutra (Exotic Wild Flower blend), Healing (Lavender/Gardenia), Meditation (Vanilla/Vetivert), Sacred Space (Herbal blend).  I also brought in a high quality Nag Champa that is traditionally used for meditation.  Up until now, I have only had my personal stash of this incense.  I have to say that Om Nag Champa is truly an exceptional incense.  A personal favorite of mine is Amber.  I could not resist the sale price of this, so got some of that too!  Finally, I have Shoyeido Incense Sampler packs that include the Jewel Series and the Angelic Series.  If you have never tried this line of incense, you are in for a treat. Prices range from $1.00 - $4.75 per pack.

Bringing back a fun item that I used to include a long time ago in my newsletters:   The Jacquie Lawson animations.  Click on the link to see what my monthly special is at White Dragon Therapies!

There has been some additions and changes to my "Beau's Favorite Providers of Other Services" page on my website.  I have added a list of Other Alternative Healthcare Professionals for your easy reference for those that are seeking these services.

Announcements:
  • The Monday afternoon Knitting Circle is moving to the Elks Lodge Gateway (Portland) #2411.  Knitting Circle is from 2:00 - 4:00pm in the dining room over by the windows. This is a social.  No fees for admittance.  If you are not currently a member of an Elks Lodge, you may attend as a guest of someone who is.  Crocheting and Knitting help with your current projects will be on hand.  (I am the teacher!!!)
  • Carole Good-Hanson of Gemini Gypsy (see my website under "Beau's favorite providers of other services") will be at the Portland Expo Christmas Bazaar on November 25 - 27, 2011 with her beautiful glass art frames.
  • My new property management has given me notice that I have until the end of this year to relocate my massage practice.  I am looking for a small office space to rent.  If anyone knows of a place suitable for my needs, please let me know.  I would like to stay in the same general area, maybe lease space from a DC or an ND, but am open to anything reasonable.

I feel like a broken record about this time of year, every year... the "season" to be sick with a cold/flu.  Please, please, please....come get an Original Raindrop Treatment.  It does not hurt.  It is 100% non-invasive, and downright relaxing!  You will feel fabulous!  And a huge bonus to you while feeling like this is it will kill whatever crud that has invaded your body that is making you sick.  It is a remedy as well as a preventative for the cold and flu.  Also, just as an FYI...I completed my Integrated Aromatherapy Certification last July.  I have essential oil remedies for you that I can custom blend that will eliminate the most ickiest symptoms as well as treat you for what is causing the symptoms....unlike what all those costly over-the-counter drugs are doing for you -- or rather NOT doing for you.

If you do opt to take the flu shot. I do strongly advise that you educate yourself about precisely what ingredients are being used in these concoctions and what harm they cause in the human body. I am providing a link for your ease of reference.  It contains many articles warning about flu shots.

Aromatherapy is the hottest alternative healing method in the United States.  It is an effective and deeply pleasurable way to maintain well-being.

I do wish to post a reminder here that if you are experiencing any cold or flu like symptoms a few days before or the day of your scheduled massage, please call me and let me know.  I would very much prefer that you stay home and get well rather than exposing healthy people to the virus....

Hot Stone Massage Therapies

By Beau Miakinkoff, LMT, LMP, CA, IAC

Massaging with hot stones is not by any means a new modality. It has been around and in use for many centuries by many different cultures. I am often asked "who used them first?" or "where did this technique originate?" I never know where to begin to explain the history behind this wonderful healing art. North American Native Indians used them. They were used in South America, Africa, Europe, Egypt, Japan and India. There is written history confirming that more than 2000 years ago the Chinese used heated stones as a means to improve the function of internal organs. Ancient Greek and Roman cultures which date back to 27 B.C. have a recorded history of using hot stones for massage and bodywork.

Hot Stone Massage was re-introduced in the United States in 1993 in Arizona by massage therapist Mary Nelson. Her invention of La Stone Therapy technique caught on and today, there are many styles and techniques of using hot stones during a massage treatment session. Hot stones are used for full body, deep tissue specific work, facials, pedicures, manicures, meridian therapy, reiki, polarity therapy and even cranial sacral work.

When performed correctly, a hot stone massage session is one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating experiences a person can receive. The stones have incredible energy. Hot stones protocols enhance the benefits of a regular massage. The effects hot stones have on the body are sedative which can relieve chronic pain, reduce stress and promote deep relaxation. There are many other valid reasons to receive a hot stone massage:

  • Decrease back pain and muscle spasms
  • Improve poor circulation
  • Relief from osteoarthritis and arthritis pain
  • Decrease stress, anxiety and tension
  • Help with insomnia and sleeping disorders
  • Decrease depression
  • Relief from fibromyalgia
  • Increase flexibility in joints, improving mobility and movement
  • Relief from strained and contracted muscles

Can you remember the last time that nothing in your body was causing pain?

I received my first hot stone massage when I was three quarters of the way through massage school in 2005. At the time, I was working full-time during the day at a very high-stress medical facility in the accounting department, going to massage school in the evenings five days a week, and emotionally stressed from coping with surviving a divorce. To say the least, I was physically exhausted and very much in need of some TLC and R&R at the close of the third term in massage school.

A student friend gifted to me a La Stone Massage session. Afterwards, as I was sitting with a cool glass of mineral water (and one tiny square of dark chocolate), I felt floaty, loopy..... "stoned" (pun intended). My body felt like a strand of cooked spaghetti. I found myself trying to count the little holes in the ceiling tiles! It was a revelation and an "ah-ha!" moment for me when I realized or rather became consciously aware that never, in my entire adult life had I been pain-free like this. It felt good. I decided then that my first CEU's when I graduated from massage school was to learn how to perform this modality so that I could share with the world how wonderful it is to feel this good without the use of a pharmaceutical drug.

Hot stone massage restores the body. The mind, at first has a bit of a confusing time with what to do with a pain-free status throughout the body, but does eventually recognize and welcome this homeostasis. This in turn lifts the spirits to new heights. There is so much room for happiness when all that pain gets massaged out of the way! Feeling fabulous like this can turn anyone into a hot stone massage junkie.

I offer several types of hot stone massage. I have a spa-type hot stone massage and a hot/cold stone massage. Mostly though, I use hot stone therapy with pretty much all of my regular massages. I do a lot of deep tissue healing, the hot stones promote deeper muscle relaxation so that I can more easily manipulate the muscles closest to the bones. I have full descriptions of all my massage therapies on my website: http://portland-massage-therapy.net/   I will even add hot stones to my aromatherapy massage sessions if you wish.

P.S. This newsletter is a monthly promotional featuring the current special I might be offering, letting you know about any new services or products being offered, and making announcements of anything new at White Dragon Therapies. I also like to feature news about current health issues. This E- newsletter is usually sent out on the first of each month. Although, there has been the rare occasion where I send out a special second newsletter during the month. This newsletter is not the same as my more often "e-blast" where additional massage discounts and specials of the week or other announcements are featured.
