Mayor Lockwood

Usually, when people ask me what I'm thankful for this time of year, I respond with those things I try my hardest not to take for granted - health, family, friendship, success. But this November gives us the opportunity to be thankful for something a little different, something we should never take for granted (though, sadly, a lot of people do).

I'm talking about the right to freely and peacefully choose our representatives in government. I know we're told this every voting cycle, but I think the events of this summer and fall, both around the world and here at home, really highlight just how vital this right is to our way of life.

'Change Your Clock Change Your Battery' Nov. 6

Smoke Detector

On Sunday, Nov. 6 Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) will again team up for the "Change Your Clock Change Your Battery" campaign to remind families of a simple task that could make the difference in surviving a home fire.

Studies have shown that having a working smoke alarm doubles a family's chances of escaping a home fire. This program encourages families to take action by changing the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors when they switch their clocks back an hour.

"Smoke detectors are an essential part of keeping our community safe," said Milton Fire Marshal Matt Marietta. "In the unfortunate event of a fire, smoke detectors in the home can let you know there is a problem before the fire is able to spread enough to threaten lives."

Milton firefighters will be happy to help community members with advice or assistance in this program, said the fire marshal. To contact the Milton fire department, call 678-242-2570 or click here

Vote on Nov. 8

District 4, Burt Hewitt, is running unopposed. Please remember council members are elected at large, so residents can vote for all seats. Additionally, the ballot will allow voters to decide on Sunday Alcohol Sales in the City of Milton and a one percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for educational purposes.

City seeks veterans' information

The City of Milton will once again display commemorative markers for Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, and in preparation is adding veterans into the city's registry of service men and women.

Through more than three years of hard work and the generosity of residents, Milton has amassed a list of more than 200 fallen veterans memorialized with markers placed on Deerfield Parkway the week of the holiday.

Each year residents ask how their family members may be added to the registry. The city does not have access to a government database revealing who served in the military. Instead, we need you to tell us.

If you, a friend or someone in your family is or was a veteran, please fill out this online form available anytime at the City of Milton Web site.

Home care specialists speak at City Hall Nov. 16

The Milton Disability Awareness Committee (MDAC) will present home care specialists from SOURCE Partners Atlanta, Community Care Services Program (CCSP) and My Accessable Home at its Community Link Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.

This open forum will take place in City Council Chambers at Milton's City Hall, 13000 Deerfield Parkway, Suite 107E (click here for directions). Everyone is invited, and there is no RSVP required.

"This is a great opportunity to be exposed to several vital aspects of in-home care at one time in one setting," said Renee Catanzaro, MDAC member. "We have speakers from two partnered local agencies that coordinate and provide care -- SOURCE Partners and CCSP -- and a representative from a home modification company specializing in providing safe and more functional environments for individuals who have had a change in physical functioning.

"For anyone with a parent, spouse, child or other family member who needs or will need in-home care, this is a meeting you do not want to miss."

Monthly crime prevention tip:
What can parents do about cyberbullying?

By Dennis Nelson, Community Outreach and Policy Coordinator

Kids are using computers now more than ever before. They are required for school work and research, but also used for exploring, playing games and socializing. With the use of new technologies come new problems.

Like many other social situations, some kids like to bully other kids online. Cyberbullying is very similar to other types of bullying, except it takes place online and through text messages sent to cell phones. Cyberbullies can be classmates, online acquaintances, even anonymous users; however, most often kids are very familiar with or know their victims.

Parents can help stop cyberbullying. They can start by researching what cyberbullying is, then talking to their kids about the issue. Once armed with information, parents can teach their kids the rules below to help prevent cyberbullying.

What Kids Need to Know

  • Never give out personal information online, whether in instant message profiles, chat rooms, blogs or personal Web sites.
  • Never tell anyone but your parents your passwords, including friends.
  • If someone sends a mean or threatening message, don't respond to it. Save it or print it out and show it to an adult.
  • Never open e-mails from someone you don't know or from someone you know is a bully.
  • Don't put anything online that you wouldn't want your classmates to see, even in an e-mail.
  • Don't send messages when you're angry. Before clicking "send," ask yourself how you would feel if it was you receiving that message.
  • Help kids who are bullied online by not joining in and showing their bullying messages to an adult.
  • Always be as polite online as you are in person.

Since most cyberbullying messages are read at home, it's important that parents know about the issue and get involved in preventing it. Just like parents help their kids avoid inappropriate Web sites, they can also protect them from cyberbullying.

What Parents Can Do

  • Keep your home computer in a busy area of your house.
  • Set up e-mail and chat accounts with your children. Make sure that you know their screen names and passwords and that they don't include any personal information in their online profiles.
  • Regularly go over their instant messenger "buddy list" with them. Ask who each person is and how your children know him or her.
  • Print the list of commonly used acronyms in instant messenger and chat rooms from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and post it by your computer.
  • Discuss cyberbullying with your children and ask if they have ever experienced it or seen it happen to someone.
  • Talk to your children. Tell them that you won't blame them if they are ever cyberbullied. Emphasize that you won't take away their computer privileges. This is the main reason kids don't tell adults when they are cyberbullied.

Fitness essay

This fall, Milton fitness camp partner/provider CorePhysique teamed up with Hopewell Middle School for an essay contest to help students learn about and express their feelings on the importance of fitness given America's obesity crisis. Following is an essay by Hopewell Student Paige D.

If teens exercised then many factors would be reduced.

Childhood obesity is a common factor that could be dramatically reduced by exercising. In fact, someone in America dies every 37 seconds from some form of heart disease. High blood pressure is one form, which means arterioles tighten and the heart has to work harder to pump blood.

Heart disease is another factor that could be helped by healthy eating and exercise. All of this can be controlled by eating breakfast each day, by controlling your portion sizes, by making every meal colorful and choosing foods low in sugar and fat. Most of all by exercising!

Exercise should be promoted at Hopewell Middle School because exercise boosts self esteem in teens. Many teens that play sports have higher self-esteem than their less active friends, and exercise can even help boost confidence because of the endorphin rush it can cause.

Endorphins are chemicals that naturally relieve pain and lift mood. These chemicals are released in your body during and after a workout and they work a long way in helping to control stress.

If teens exercised then there would be less bullying because kids would feel better about themselves and would not have to bully kids to make themselves feel better. Bullying may be actually be cut in half or maybe even greater than that!

Many students are stressed if they have a test the next day but that will not need to happen anymore because students will be less stressed. Hopewell may have a higher academic average overall! Wouldn't that be great?

I personally believe that exercise should be a daily part of every teen's life because it certainly is a part of mine! I enjoy exercising and I enjoy helping people learn how to live a healthier lifestyle by eating healthier and exercising.

All in all if you think about it exercise can really be life changing!
