Mayor Lockwood

April is an extremely busy time in Milton, as I'm sure you will notice by the sheer size of this month's newsletter. My guess is that everyone is glad to be out and about in a warm Georgia spring, myself included, and wants to get together.

In fact, that busyness is what makes April the perfect month for the Georgia Municipal Association's Georgia Cities Week, held this year from April 17-23. Now in its 12th year, this designation is part of an effort to raise public awareness about the services cities perform and educate the public on how city government works.

There might not be a time of the year more chock full of opportunities for Milton residents to interact with their government. Almost every week this month has meetings, events and more. Following is a rundown of just a few of the things you can look forward to this month - besides Spring Break, of course.

Memorial Day 2011: Call for veterans

Memorial Day Poster

The City of Milton will hold its fourth annual Memorial Day event on Monday, May 30.

Through more than three years of hard work and the generosity of residents, Milton has amassed a list of more than 150 fallen veterans memorialized with markers placed on Deerfield Parkway the week of the holiday.

Each year residents ask how their family members may be added to the registry. The city does not have access to a government database revealing who served in the military. Instead, we need you to tell us.

Once you give the City of Milton the information, it will be placed in a secure database. The names will then be sent to City Councilman Bill Lusk, who for three years has personally built, painted, engraved and placed the markers at his own expense.

To request a marker, please click here.

Milton gets $100k grant for Ga. 9

The City of Milton was awarded a $100,000 Fiscal Year 2011 Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) grant from the Atlanta Regional Commission. This grant will help Milton create a new quality growth plan for the Ga. 9 and Deerfield Parkway area.

This has been a short term work program goal for Milton as specified in the 2010 Comprehensive Plan. The plan highlighted Ga. 9 and the Deerfield character area as future development areas in need of master planning.

This LCI grant will provide funding for expertise to create an overarching plan for potential development and redevelopment of the area. It would also define appropriate land uses and zoning changes, and include improvements for pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

The LCI program is a federally funded program that also assists with implementations grants after master planning is complete.
Successful completion of an LCI master plan will allow Milton to be eligible for a larger pot of federal funding to build the transportation projects required to see the plan realized.
Faces and voices of the city

Have you ever visited or called Milton City Hall and wanted to learn more about the friendly staff? This month we'll meet two employees, Angie Kapijimpanga and Katherine Fies.

AngieA number of Milton residents might recognize the voice of Angie Kapijimpanga.

Milton's first receptionist, Kapijimpanga has been a part of the city since day one. She started as a CH2M HILL OMI employee on Feb. 5, 2007, later transitioning to city employment as Citizen Responder for the Public Works Department.

Kapijimpanga's job involves talking with residents about issues with rights of way, pothole repairs and storm water issues. She makes sure your issue is dealt with in a timely manner and stays as a point of contact throughout.

KatherineIf you enter City Hall through Suite 107 F entrance, one of the first people you may meet is Records Clerk Katherine Fies. She is most residents' first point of contact for the Police and Fire departments.

Fies joined the city in April of 2008 as a receptionist and later transitioned into the Records Department in October of 2008. She happily assists visitors with any inquiries relating to the Police and Fire departments and provides copies of police and fire records, such as accident or incident reports, upon request.

Monthly crime prevention tip:
Stay safe this spring

By Dennis Nelson

As the warm spring weather approaches, the Milton Police Department wants to remind you of some tips to keep yourself and your home safe during the spring months.

  • Keep doors locked at all times. If you are working in the back yard, keep your front and garage doors closed and locked. If in the front yard, lock the back door. Always lock your doors when you leave, even if you only plan to be gone for a few minutes.
  • During spring weather, many people open windows or sliding glass doors while they are at home. Always remember to close and lock your windows and sliding doors when you go to bed or leave the house.
  • Install motion-activated lights in your front and back yards. This way, when someone approaches your home the lights automatically come on, illuminating that person.
  • Put all ladders and other tools back into a secure storage area after you use them. Ladders and other tools can be used by criminals to access your home. Always lock any storage unit or shed you have on your property.
  • Be aware of home improvement scams. If you did not solicit the contractor or salesman who shows up at your door unannounced, do not do business with that person.
  • If a utility representative comes to your house, request identification. True representatives will carry their identification and they will gladly show it to you. Call their company for verification.
  • Always remember to roll up your car windows, take any valuables out of your car and lock your doors every time you exit your vehicle, even if your vehicle is parked in your driveway.

Being a good neighbor can be one of the best crime prevention tools. Watchful, attentive neighbors can spot criminals and alert the police and community to their presence. To get involved in your community, get involved with Milton Police And Citizens Together (MPACT) and help us keep your spring happy and safe.

Monthly fitness tip:
Two simple, challenging exercises

baby weightlifter

By Kolleen Riddick

What if I told you that you could get a total body workout by doing just two exercises: variable squats and push-ups?

With all the fancy weight-training equipment out there it is easy for us to overlook the "equipment" that each of us already has built in -- our own body weight.

If you have ever attended one of my fitness boot camps or one-on-one sessions, you know that on occasion I throw out all the equipment and focus on sculpting the body with nothing but squats and push-ups. And it never fails to leave my clients grimacing.

By doing these two exercises, you can target your entire body. So what's the trick? The trick comes simply by placing your feet and hands in a variety of positions, which results in the recruitment of many other muscles in the body.

Let's start by talking about squats. Squats are a functional compound exercise, meaning they recruit several muscle groups all at once. They are the No.1 exercise for toning and tightening your butt, hips, quadriceps, stomach, lower and middle back, calves, hamstrings and shoulders. They are the crème de la crème of body sculpting exercises.

Now, how about push-ups? Push-ups are another killer exercise that can be severely underestimated. Early in my fitness career, I only used push-ups to sculpt the chest and triceps. However, they can be used for so much more. When performed properly, push-ups can engage every muscle from your toes to your neck. They are great for working the chest, triceps, core, legs and hips. If squats are the crème de la crème, then push-ups are the cherry on top.

Let's learn how to do them properly:

Squat: Stand with your feet hip-width apart, shoulders back, chin neutral, and toes facing straight ahead or angled slightly outward. Slowly bend your knees and lower your hips towards the floor, keeping your torso straight and abs pulled in tight. Inhale on the way down and exhale on the way up.

Push-up: Position yourself face down on the floor, balancing on your toes and hands (or if this is too difficult, drop to your knees). Your hands should be slightly wider than your shoulders, body in a straight line from head to toe (or knees). Engage your core by drawing your navel to your spine. Slowly bend your arms and lower your body to the floor, stopping when your elbows are at 90 degrees. Exhale and push back up. Try not to let your booty stick up.

If you'd like to learn more tips like these, join us for the next Milton Fitness Camp on April 11.

Riddick, a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer and Corrective Exercise Specialist, is founder of Milton-based CorePhysique and instructs Milton's fitness camps through a partnership with the City of Milton.
