Let's talk turkey, let's give thanksMayor Lockwood Formal

I know what you're thinking - November mayor's message ... giving thanks, talking turkey: one big, longwinded cliché. But let me try and change your mind.

A lot of people, all across the city and all across the board, economically and socially, have recently experienced tough times. And while things are slowly getting better - I think we're all thankful for that - the progress doesn't mean everything is fixed and back to normal.

In fact, what we considered normal before the downturn of 2008 might never come back - so it's time to reassess the situation and take stock of what matters now. It seems to me that it's exactly times like these when we need to open up our hearts, drop those cynical defenses, and be truthful about how lucky we are. I'll be the first.

Milton Roundup: Thank you

Roundup 2010

The City of Milton would like to sincerely thank everyone who made the 2010 Milton Roundup the most successful event in the history of the city.

This year's Roundup included 68 vendors and 21 sponsors, more than any of the previous years.

More than 4,000 people attended this year's Roundup, bringing with them more than 350 canned goods and foodstuffs for the community pantry of North Fulton Community Charities.

We look forward to expanding and improving this event for Milton's citizens next year.

City seeks information for Veterans Day

Veterans Day markers

The City of Milton will once again display commemorative markers for Veterans Day, Nov. 11, and in preparation is adding veterans into the city's registry of service men and women.

Through more than two years of hard work and the generosity of residents, Milton has amassed a list of more than 150 fallen veterans memorialized with markers placed on Deerfield Parkway the week of the holiday.

Each year residents ask how their family members may be added to the registry. The city does not have access to a government database revealing who served in the military. Instead, we need you to tell us.

There is also an online form available anytime at the City of Milton Web site. You may either click here or go to the "Find a Form or Permit" tab at the top of this page and choose "Register military veterans' information" from the "Online Forms" section at the top of the page.

'Change Your Clock Change Your Battery'

Change your clock

On Sunday, Nov. 7, Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs are teaming up for the "Change Your Clock Change Your Battery®" program to remind families of a simple task that could make the difference in surviving a home fire.

Studies have shown that having a

working smoke alarm doubles a family's chances of escaping a home fire. This 23-year-old campaign encourages families to take action by changing the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors during the switch to Standard Time. It now incorporates more than 6,200 fire departments nationwide.

In the unfortunate event of a fire, a working smoke detector can add precious minutes for families to escape from a burning home and call 911, said Matt Marietta, Milton's Fire Marshal.

Charter system meeting Nov. 3

This fall, Fulton County Schools will study whether it will ask the Georgia Department of Education to grant charter status to the entire school system.

If granted, Fulton County will be the first large district in Georgia to become a charter system, which could mean more flexibility in spending, staffing, and innovation in its educational model.  It would also grant greater involvement and decision-making authority for parents.

Community engagement is a trademark of charter systems, and as such, the district is starting the exploration process by holding town hall-style meetings to gather input during the months of October and November.  Feedback will also be gathered through the school system web site.

The nearest meeting in November for many Milton residents will be at

Independence High School at the Milton Center on Nov. 3. It will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
