Back to school, back to work

Mayor Lockwood Formal

Like a lot of people, the recession of the past two years has had a marked effect on my business and way of life. Frankly, it's been tough on my family -- like I'm sure it has been on a lot of our citizens. Lately, though, I've found my confidence rising thanks to some cautiously optimistic numbers.

In late July, a local newspaper asked the City of Milton for statistics regarding building permits (including renovations) issued through the first half of the year and how those totals stacked up against the same time in 2009. According to our Community Development Department, the issued number of permits rose 54 percent over the same period in 2009. To be fair, though, that first half of 2009 was possibly the worst of the recession that has troubled so many.

Milton joins "2010 by 2010" Campaign

Ada proclamation
The City of Milton joined a growing league of local governments by proclaiming a recommitment to the implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at its July 19 meeting.

With the proclamation, Milton became a part of The National ADA Symposium's "2010 by 2010 Campaign." The group hopes to collect 2,010 proclamations prior to the end of 2010 for the bill's 20th anniversary.

Pictured above is Milton's City Council with members of the Milton Disabilities Awareness Committee (MDAC), which accepted the proclamation.

The landmark civil rights legislation was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990.

If you are interested in volunteering with MDAC, click here.

Firefighters take it to the streets

Boot Drive
The City of Milton Fire Department will once again hit the streets from Aug. 13 to Sept. 5 to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's "Fill the Boot" drive.

All you need to do to contribute is keep an eye out for firefighters at popular intersections, then give generously.

Pictured above are Milton's City Council, firefighters and representatives from the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the July 19 City Council meeting, where the city recognized MDA firefighter appreciation month.

In the last three years, Milton's Fire Department has raised $112,000 for the charity, including $48,000 last year.

New tree ordinance information

Milton e-Roundup

On July 7, 2010, Milton's City Council passed a Tree Conservation Ordinance.  As such, all residents who want to remove any trees greater than 15 inches in diameter must complete a Tree Removal Permit Application, available at City Hall.

The applicant must completely fill in all shaded areas on the Tree Removal Application Form and return the completed form to the City Arborist, Mark Law.

The ordinance also requires that a person or company hired for the removal of trees be properly insured and registered with the Georgia Secretary of State or have a current City of Milton business license.

The City Arborist will review the application and the specified trees.

· If the tree(s) are dead, dangerous, or diseased, then a permit for their removal will be issued by the city. A detailed report from a certified arborist or a site visit by the city arborist may be required.  No permit fee will be charged to the applicant.

· If the applicant is removing live, healthy trees that are protected by the city ordinance,  zoning, or permitting conditions, then a permit will be issued and a permit fee will be required.

Mitigation Required
All live, healthy protected trees that are removed MUST be mitigated as determined by the city arborist. The arborist will determine the number of replacement/recompense trees to be planted on the property. If the number of trees to be planted on the property is less than the required number for replacement or recompense, then a fee , as determined by the city arborist, will be paid in addition to planting the specified number of trees.

Permit Issued
Before the permit is issued, the applicant must agree to: plant the specified trees; pay the required fee, if any; sign Section C of the Tree Removal Permit Application; and return it to the city arborist.

A Tree Removal Permit Application Package will be available at the city's Web site soon.

Alarm registration reminder

Alarm
Just a reminder that the City of Milton requires that all commercial and residential alarm systems be registered with the city within five days of their installation.

If you move into a home that already has a security system registered, you only have to change the contact information and do not need to pay the $25 registration fee. A numbered sticker is issued upon registration and should be displayed near the front entrance.

To view the city's Code referencing false alarm incidents and registration requirements or to download a registration form, click here.  Forms are also available at City Hall, Suite 107G.
