Mayor Lockwood Formal

March is here, and it appears we've seen an end to the very cold winter the city has had this year.

That's a good thing for a number of families, including my own, which have children at Milton's Bell Memorial Park and the City of Milton/Hopewell Youth Association spring baseball program.

Games start March 6, and if you've been to the fields you know how busy it can be there. But it sure is great to see the kids having fun and run into other friends and parents from across the city.

In many ways, the park is a reflection of Milton - a growing and diverse place. And so that we at City Hall know just how much we've grown, I'm asking you all to keep an eye out for the 2010 Census form. It should be arriving at the beginning of March in your mailbox.

Milton PD launches Outreach Program

Phillips

The Milton Police Department has officially launched its Community Outreach Program and is looking for local groups seeking education about issues related to law enforcement.

Headed by 11-year police veteran Andrew Phillips, the only officer in Georgia to have been awarded the Department of Justice's National Medal of Valor, the program is designed to connect Milton residents to their police professionals in a variety of ways.

Phillips said homeowners' associations, parent teacher organizations, professional groups, Boy and Girl Scout Troops, and more are welcome to contact him to request a police presence or training for matters important to them.

He is available by calling 678-242-2505 or e-mailing
[email protected].

Arbor Day event March 20

Tree - Princeton American Elm greensThe City of Milton will hold an Arbor Day celebration March 20 at 10 a.m. at Fire Station No. 41 located on Arnold Mill Road.

Details are still be worked out, so keep your eyes and ears open to help bring more greenery to Milton, recently named a "Tree City, USA" by the Arbor Day Foundation.

Census 2010: It's in our hands

handsThe 2010 Census will document the changes in our nation since the last decennial census in 2000, and tell us how we've evolved as a country.

And, because census data affect how more than $400 billion per year in federal funding is distributed to tribal, state and local governments, the census also will frame the future of our country for the next 10 years. It is vital that everyone in the United States be counted in 2010.

The City of Milton is an official partner with the Census, and as such, has a wealth of information on this year's count.

Cuffed for a Cause April 10

Cuffed logoAs part of the Milton Police Department's ongoing fundraising efforts for Special Olympics of Georgia's Law Enforcement Torch Run, on April 10 officers will be taking part in "Cuffed for a Cause."

In short, the event features a single officer who is handcuffed to a treadmill for eight hours in a public place. That public place is still being narrowed down, so stayed tuned for more information.

Milton Clydesdales to climb again

Clydesdales

The Clydesdale is renowned for its strength, stamina and teamwork - just like Milton's firefighters.

This April, the Milton Clydesdales will once again prove why they are worthy of the name as a team of city firefighters will ascend the 50 floors - that's 1150 stairs in full turnout gear - of One Ninety One Peachtree in Atlanta for charity.

It's called the Fight for Air Climb 2010, and it's all to raise money for the American Lung Association in its mission to foster lung disease awareness, research, advocacy and education. The event takes place Saturday, April 17 and features hundreds of families and corporate and fire station teams from across the state.

Earth Day Festival at Birmingham Park April 17

Milton Grows Green logo
The Milton Grows Green Committee has announced plans to hold Milton's first Earth Day Festival in Birmingham Park on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The event will feature information about existing and future environmental projects and programs in Milton.

Outside vendors of environmental products and services will be included, along with park tours, a display of the winners of an environmental art competition and hands-on demonstrations.

Anyone wanting to volunteer to help with the event or to inquire about vendor opportunities can e-mail [email protected] or contact Gina Schwendel at 770-310-6679.

Web site has two new important features

The City of Milton's Web site has received two important technological upgrades in the past month, Crime Reports and Municode.

Crime Reports allows citizens to track crime in their neighborhood as it happens. Municode, on the other hand, promotes a better understanding of Milton's laws by making them fully searchable by keyword.
