Mayor Lockwood's Monthly Message

The City of Milton offers much to its residents and visitors: beautiful landscapes, friendly people, safety, award winning schools and excellent businesses. Some could argue that you would never have to leave the comforts of Milton to live your life. Residents of this great City have everything they need within the 40 square miles of Milton and we need to take advantage of that. Every week, fine Milton businesses are forced to close their doors due to lack of revenue. Our favorite restaurants are shutting down because they do not have enough patrons and shopping centers are vacant. This must not continue. It's time we realize what we can do to help keep these businesses alive. Read the complete address |

Climb Atlanta 2009
A team of Milton firefighters, dubbed the "Milton Clydesdales" will participate in Climb Atlanta, an event benefiting the American Lung Association. The department's goal is to raise $2,500. During the event, hosted at 191 Peachtree Tower on April 18, 10am-1pm, the Milton team will climb 50 floors (1150 steps) in full bunker gear that includes helmet, coat, pants, boots, gloves and liner. Captain Clydesdale Christopher Seay, is back for his third year and uses the climb to encourage fitness within the department.
Climb Atlanta has a special category for firefighters and other first responders who can use this challenge as a training exercise or to encourage fitness among their department. Different teams of firefighters compete for special awards and ascend the stairs after all other climbers.

City-wide Volunteer Effort
A city-wide volunteer effort to cleanup Birmingham Park will begin on April 25. This project, spearheaded by Milton Grows Green and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is part of two national clean-up programs, "The Great American Cleanup" and "Day of Service." Residents are encouraged to join in this major park cleanup by contacting cleanupmilton2009@cityofmiltonga.us. Among the projects scheduled are the clean-up and repair of a house in the park, clearing fences from prior farming use, clearing fallen trees and limbs for chipping, mowing and clearing pastures, repairing Old Bullpen Road, and the clearing of a dump beside that road. Projects are available for all skill and fitness levels. Youngsters may participate with adult supervision at non-dangerous sites. Individuals are encouraged to sign up to work a half or whole day on projects appropriate for their fitness and capabilities under the close supervision of team leaders at each project location. |

Christian Ames Mayor for a Day
Hopewell Middle School student Christian Aames had the distinction of being "Mayor for a Day," at Milton City Hall on March 2. Aames was chosen based on his essay: "If I were Mayor I would..." Mayor Lockwood chose Aames' essay from among several written by other Hopewell Middle School students for a contest sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association. Lockwood gave Aames, his mother, uncle and sister a tour of City Hall. After dinner with the Council, Aames kicked off the City Council meeting and assisted the Mayor in swearing in new volunteers for two different committees. After the Mayor read Ames' essay to the crowd, Lockwood presented him with a gold key to the City.
