Mayor Lockwood's Monthly Message

Mayor FarmLast year proved to be a successful one for the City of Milton.  Together, we achieved many good things. We established a new 911 partnership with the City of Alpharetta, supported the Intergovernmental Agreement with Fulton County regarding sewer in designated areas, created several committees that will help to shape Milton, made a great deal of progress on our Comprehensive Plan and more. We set and met goals for ourselves, and even surpassed a few. During this New Year, we are bound and determined to work harder and make Milton better than we ever imagined.

Recycling Program at Bell Memorial
Recycling Symbol
Visitors to the City of Milton's Bell Memorial Park will no longer have to toss that empty soda can or depleted water bottle into the trash; instead, they will be able to recycle them and other materials thanks to a new free recycling program offered by the Milton Grows Green committee and Community Waste Services.

Safe Routes to School
School Crossing
The City of Milton has partnered with three Fulton County schools within City limits to apply for the Safe Routes to School grant through the Georgia Department of Transportation. Milton will be applying on behalf of the three schools. The grant funds, if awarded, will be used to construct sidewalk connections and new trails and to improve crosswalks and signage in school zones. The City's SRTS team has drafted a Milton SRTS plan and has begun to develop common goals.

Essay Contest Open to Sixth Graders

Essay ContestThe Georgia Municipal Association invites all sixth grade students in Georgia to participate in a statewide essay contest addressing the topic, "If I Were Mayor, I Would..."

The contest gives students a chance to creatively use grade-specific language arts skills and civics/social studies knowledge.

Twelve winners - one from each of GMA's districts - will be selected and invited, along with their parents, teacher and local mayor, to an awards luncheon in April. Prizes, including a $250 savings bond, will be awarded to each winner.

A "Certificate of Participation" will be sent to each student who submits an essay. The certificate recognizes the student's effort and names him or her "Mayor of the Day."

Essays must be submitted by March 6 and not exceed 350 words. For more information, contest rules and to print an official entry form, go to the GMA Web site.
Rural by Design workshop and first Comprehensive Transportation Plan Meeting

Street
The City of Milton is initiating its first Comprehensive Transportation Plan this month with a kick-off meeting and "Rural by Design" workshop on Thursday Jan. 22 from 4 to 9 pm at City Hall in Council Chambers. This meeting is open to the public and all residents and business owners are encouraged to attend.

The meeting will present the transportation plan process, schedule, and activities for the overall transportation plan. The workshop will be led by Randall Arendt, author of a book about maintaining small town characteristics, "Rural by Design". This will offer the community the opportunity to develop a strategy for ensuring that the transportation plan and its program of improvements support the City of Milton's desired rural community nature.
