CHARLIE: A HOCKEY STORY VANCOUVER FRINGE FESTIVAL SEPTEMBER 8 - 17, 2011
One of my dearest friends is taking his family history very seriously. This year at the Vancouver Fringe Festival you'll see Jim Sands telling the story of his Uncle Charlie's career in the NHL. I was honoured to shoot his preview videos. It's a raucous play-by-play commentary on some of hockey's greats that's both suspense-filled and hilarious.
During his 12-season career, Charlie met many of hockey's greatest legends including Foster Hewitt, King Clancy, Eddie Shore and Ace Bailey. He was involved in many key events from 1933-43. These included one of the longest games ever played and one of the most violent incidents in all of hockey.
In Charlie: A Hockey Story, Jim uses music, storytelling and acting to show how he learned an important lesson in forgiveness by exploring the myth and meaning of the life of an uncle he never met.

The Perfect Gift
 | | Cory Bretz |
It's all about them.
A decade ago, my father surprised me and my siblings with his gift to each of us. It was a small wrapped package about the size of a pocket book.
It was a videotape of all the old 8mm films he had shot when we were kids.
Twice a year - once in the winter and once in the summer - he would buy a single roll of 10 minute 8mm film. It was the kind of movie camera that had the bank of very, very bright lights. When he aimed the camera at you, you almost went blind.
And it was silent. For the few seconds of soundless film footage of my late mother I can clearly see her lips saying something but I don't know what she was saying. How I long to hear her reassuring voice again or her laugh that could fill up a room. When she died in 1989 I hadn't yet started interviewing people in front of a video camera.
My dad, on the other hand, is still around. I wasn't going to have the same regrets about him. Several summers ago, he agreed to be interviewed.
We set up the lights and video camera in his downstairs office and we spent 3 hours together, him talking, me listening.
My dad told the story of his parents and grandparents. He spoke of growing up, getting an education, and becoming a father. He talked about losing his wife and then finding another beautiful woman.
More importantly, he spoke about who he is on the inside and what really matters to him.
On that video - which will be around forever - I can see my dad smiling at me. I can hear the sound of his reassuring voice and his laughter that can fill a room.
