Douglass Freed's grand landscape paintings are lush abstractions of his travels. Inspired by his panoramic photographs of dramatic cliffs of the Pacific coast, the plains of the Midwest, and the lagoons of Florida, his works possess familiar imageries of a universal place and time. In a corresponding manner, photographer and sculptor Taliaferro Jones' images of waterscapes, and sculpture, reference her own artistic space where arrangements, colors and shapes, all operate on the artist's close relationship with water and personal rhythm. Conversely, Joshua Hershman's sculpted representations of vintage camera apparatus, serve to remind us of a time when photography was a strictly defined process, dominated by carefully balanced physical elements.
The common exhibition factor for the artists, Freed, Jones and Hershman, begins with the camera. Yet, the finished painting, photography and sculpture presented by each artist demonstrate an immense departure from their common initial medium, establishing each artist's highly personalized vernacular. A deep sense of place particular to their travels, modified by independent degrees of abstraction and distinct visual vocabularies, is unified by the artists' shared interest in illumination and desire to convey some kind of transcendence, while drawing on nature as a primary force and eventual focus.
Derivative of a Latin term that very loosely means within exclusive judgment, the exhibition title takes a punning view of a single common instrument, the camera, used by the artists and their ensuing artworks. Curated in camera, the exhibition is chosen for the artists' well-developed concepts of place, superior execution of process, and visual pleasure.
