MICALA GALLERY PRESENTS:
COLD+HOT 2008
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - 06.17.08 - (for immediate release) Micala Gallery is proud to announce "COLD+HOT 2008" an exhibition of glass sculpture showcasing the work of select national and international glass artists together in a single exhibition.  Featured artists, Mark Abildgaard (California), Ned Cantrell (Denmark), Alessandro Casson (Italy), Grant Garmezy (Virginia), Taliaferro Jones (Canada), Weston Lambert (Washington), Karen Nyholm (Denmark), David Ruth (California), Thomas Scoon (Massachusetts), and Sasha Zhitneva (Pennsylvania), collectively demonstrate the expansive versatility of glass as a sculpture medium in terms of material, color and form.  The exhibition opens on Tuesday, July 2.  The opening reception, with artists in attendance, is Friday, July 18, 2008 at 5 pm.

David Ruth, "Varari"The exhibition title, "COLD+HOT 2008," derives from the distinct processes used by glass artists for millenia - sculpting its form, or cold-working it while cold (actually, room temperature), very hard and brittle; and working hot glass, shaping it while molten, using blowing and/or kiln forming techniques at temperatures ranging from 1700 to over 3000 degrees.  Rich in visual pleasure, "COLD+HOT 2008" introduces the work of new artists to Micala Gallery, including Gary Clemenceau (digital media) and Lorraine Peltz (painting), who are not glass artists but whose work reminds us of the specially lyrical and timeless qualities of glass sculpture.

Glass, a mysterious
substance, is found in nature as raw crystal and in grains of silica.  Mastery of its form and color is steeped in dramatic history spanning continents and politics over millennia - it is an extraordinarily difficult medium to sculpt and possess - yet, we delight in all its permutations and marvel at its uniqueWeston Lambert, "...Memory" relationship with light.  Micala Gallery is proud to present this beautiful exhibition of sculpture and exceptionally talented artists to you.
