MICA�LA GALLERY YEAR-END EXHIBITION FEATURES
DAVID PATCHEN, JULIE LAZARUS, and DAVID RUTH:
GLASS SCULPTURE
|
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - 11.15.07 - Mica�la Gallery announces the opening of an exhibition featuring the newest work by glass sculptors Julie Lazarus, David Patchen and David Ruth. Julie Lazarus and David Patchen are artists whose work is founded on intimate relationships with Italian glassmaking. David Ruth's work began in the French tradition of dal-de-verre and continues his ongoing study of color and light. The joint exhibition illustrates how accomplished artists with classical influences explore dramatically different ends of one spectrum while employing glass as a unifying sculptural medium.

The work of Julie Lazarus of Fort Worth, Texas, is
informed by 11 years of work in Murano.  Her art is inspired through
observations of abundant light reflected by the water and buildings of
Venice and Murano. As a painter and glass artist, Lazarus' sketches of Venice become the foundation of her range of
paintings and glass sculptures. Her newest Anima series translate her
sketches into abstract works that contrast colorful spaces within bold
shapes and color. The exuberant forms created by positive and negative
spaces become more organic, acting as visual aids to guide the viewer's
eye around and throughout Lazarus' sculptures. |
 David Patchen
is a San Francisco-based artist who uses a modern interpretation of
classical techniques from Murano, Italy, to create glass sculpture with
amazing detail. Patchen's
work is differentiated through his exploration of complex patterns,
contrasting colors and transparencies through advanced applications of
cane and murrine-colored rods and patterned cross-sections of glass.
Varied compositions and design allow Patchen
to consider his forms multi-dimensional canvases, capturing thousands
of colorful lines within the glass through windows, allowing views into
and through a work. Patchen's
forms suggest marine influences, and challenge his viewers'
expectations of the degree of detail glass can support. We will
feature Patchen's newest work in his Resistenza and Parabola series.

 David Ruth
introduces three new sculptures inspired by his recent travel to the
Antarctic. A widely admired and well-established glass sculptor based
in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ruth's
method begins with a painterly approach that is the foundation of his
architectonic, and organic, glass based installations and sculptures. Ruth's work is featured in prominent international and local collections.
Mica�la Gallery is
a passionate supporter of glass sculpture. A sculptural medium steeped
in dramatic history spanning continents and politics over millennia,
glass is, quite perversely, extraordinarily difficult. Yet, we delight
in all its permutations and wonder at its unique relationships with
form and light. It is, "over the top." Honored to announce this
