| Greetings!
You are cordially invited to the opening reception of
"Mandalas for a New Century," a two-person exhibition of new multi-disciplinary
works by San Francisco artists Joel Hoyer and Martin Freeman on Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 5 pm. Both Hoyer and Freeman express their relationship to landscapes remembered and imagined, through a focused exploration of texture and surface. Master Gilder Joel Hoyer, creates minimal, yet richly textured images in the fragile mediums of egg tempera and gold. His imagery references the Pacific rim of his youth, abstracting a topology of island landmasses and tropical horizons at dusk. Freeman's topologies, on the other hand, take a more microscopic view, appearing almost as slabs of rock with worlds imbedded within. His process of scavenging, then cutting and masking preparatory works, combined with a playful use of varnishes, creates works of striking depth. Fissures and circular forms permeate these paintings, simulating other forms such as glass tile, encaustic waxes, and enameled metals. Together, these two artists trade and share forms to create works with incredible surface, which belie a careful composition below.
