From the Family: Good news!
Win a summer vacation to the Vee Bar!
Kari & Brent

If you visited late in the summer, you would have noticed that Annie was expecting puppies.  We didn't take her to get an ultrasound so we were surprised on September 8 when Annie had eight puppies!  This was her first litter which is why we might have expected 4-6 puppies.  Annie is a great mom and tends to each puppy well.  She was bred to an Australian Shepherd--Border Collie cross.  This makes the puppies half Border Collie, 1/4 Blue Heeler, and 1/4 Australian Shepherd.  Some of the puppies are already spoken for but we still need to find homes for a couple of them.  There are six females and two males.  They are just learning how to play with each other and Annie.  Our Dachshund, Boone, was a jealous dog when we got Annie so we weren't sure how he was going to react when the puppies were born.  When the puppies were only a few days old, we introduced Boone to them (outside the whelping box) and since then, he enjoys peering into the box to see the puppies.  He was excited to play with them when they were first learning how to walk.  We even dubbed him with the name Mr. Mom.  However, as the puppies grow older and get more assertive, Boone is less and less tolerant of their "childish" behavior, and he must work a little harder to let them know who the top dog really is!  Here is a link to a video on YouTube of the puppies about 2.5 weeks of age.

Greetings!

Greetings and a happy fall!  The cold weather is setting in and the snow is beginning to come.  Our mountains have already seen several inches.  However, the scenic highway 130 is still open across the top of the mountain.  Usually they try to keep the road open as long as hunting season is open.  This fall a doe deer and her growing fawn have made their home very near the main lodge.  They often walk through the yard, just feet away from the picture windows in the dining room.  I guess they know how to avoid hunters!

Back at the Ranch:  New Bridge
Our main river bridge which carries traffic such as delivery trucks, SUV's, pick-ups, and trailers, has finally carried all the traffic it's wooden frame can take.  The boards underneath the bridge began to rot because of the splash from the high water in the spring.  The concrete pillar which supports the center of the bridge catches debris, sometimes whole trees, in the spring runoff.  The top boards need replaced as many as two times per year because of all the traffic it receives.  The horses do their fair share of damage to it also.  We will add the new brdige on the upstream side of the bridge that is currently there so that traffic into the ranch is not interrupted.  The new bridge will be much more permanent, and there won't be a center pillar to catch unwanted debris.  The new bridge should be complete before the end of October.  Once the new bridge is in place, the old bridge will be torn out.
From the Family
Kari & BrentIf you were able to visit the Vee Bar this summer, you probably heard the good news.  Brent and I are adopting a baby!  We have completed the paperwork, background checks, and home-study.  We have submitted our family profile:  a scrapbook that describes Brent and I and our lifestyle in a nutshell.  We are adopting through Wyoming Children's Society in Cheyenne, Wyoming.  They work with birth-mothers and adoptive parents in the state of Wyoming.  Because the birth-mothers ultimately choose who the adoptive parents will be, the wait time is uncertain.  We keep saying our prayers!
Raffle Deadline Fast Approaching!
Kari & BrentThe DRA is holding a raffle and the last day to buy tickets is quickly approaching!  There is a unique opportunity for you to enter a raffle to WIN a six-night vacation for two people at the Vee Bar.  The project is sponsored by the Dude Rancher's Association.  Each DRA member ranch is selling a limited number of tickets.  At our annual membership meeting in January, the winner's name will be drawn.  Chances are about 1 in 500.  Tickets are 1 for $20 or 6 for $100.  Proceeds go to the Educational Trust (scholarships which Kari, Meagan, Mollee, & Darcy received while attending college).  In addition to the aforementioned raffle, the Vee Bar is holding their own mini-drawing for a free Saturday night stay for two people to be used during the summer months.  You have until December 1st to purchase tickets, but they are selling fast!  Call 1-800-483-3227 or e-mail the office if you are interested!
We love to hear from you!  Let us know how you are doing.  Thanks for all your previous business and if you can't make it here in the next two months, we hope to see you in 2010!

Sincerely,
