Poisonous Weed Update

Most of you may recall, last summer we had an issue with poisonous weeds.  By the time we learned which weeds were most likely to affect our horses, it was too late in the season to spray them.  We have it narrowed down to a variation of Death Camus and Wild Lupine.  Although we have some Water Hemlock on the property, it is very rare for a horse to eat this.  An alkaloid test also indicated that something other than Water Hemlock affected the horses.  This summer we were on the lookout and no horses were affected.  After discussing options with the local Weed & Pest office, Kari began the tedious task of spraying Death Camus.  Unfortunately, the weeds spanned a large amount of acreage and the ideal time to spray is not very long.  Time began to run out.  Except for a few isolated patches, the majority of the weeds have been sprayed.  A much smaller population will grow next year, and after those are sprayed we should have almost none left.  This all sounds good in theory, but it takes neighboring ranchers help to manage a weed problem.  If they grow on one property without being controlled, they are sure to spread.
