STOP the fall before it happens! Look First!
Did you know… Falls are the leading cause of childhood injuries in and around the home.
Taking smart risk means recognizing the risks of an activity and choosing to manage risk to prevent injuries. Many injuries are a result of poor planning. Looking first and thinking ahead can significantly reduce the risk of injury.
Your choices can prevent injuries. Choose smart risk and make sure to Look First! It is normal and part of a child’s development to be curious. Adults must anticipate hazards instead of waiting for a child to discover them first.

To prevent falls in the home.
- lock balcony doors
- use approved safety gates
- do not use baby walkers
- install child-resistant latches on windows and screens
- attach non-skid or rubber mats in bathtubs.
To prevent falls in the backyard.
- Actively supervise all young children on play structures.
- Put railings around all decks that are more than one metre off the ground.
- Trampolines should never be used in home or recreational settings. Increased supervision (by adults or trained spotters), setting the trampoline at ground level, and padding the trampoline have all been ineffective in preventing injuries. The protective effect of netting has not been determined.
Look First! Look First! Look First!
INJURIES ARE NOT ACCIDENTS… THEY ARE PREDICTABLE AND PREVENTABLE!

Giving Some
Minutes Back
On June 5, 2011, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation took time to honour its hundreds of volunteers who give their time throughout the year to help raise money for the Stollery Children’s Hospital. This year we had a “Minute to Win It” Gala theme and the volunteers all thoroughly enjoyed playing the games of skill. In addition, a gift of video games was made to the teen room on behalf of all the volunteers, a gift that was greatly appreciated by all the children who use this space. To all our volunteers, thank you for making what we do possible.

For their help in making this event happen, we would like to thank the following donors for their support of Gala In Blue Jeans:
