‘CLOTHING SAFETY FOR YOUR CHILD’

Clothing is an important part of our everyday lives. It keeps us warm and protects us from the weather. It may seem surprising, but clothing can also be dangerous for our children.

Did you know?
Children can be strangled if drawstrings or hoods get caught on items such as playground equipment, fences or in car/bus doors.

Did you know?
Children can choke on buttons that have come loose from their clothing.

Did you know?
Children can be burned severely if their clothing catches fire.

Look First

  • Purchase children’s clothing that is draw-string free. Choose clothes that have other closures such as snaps, Velcro, elastic or buttons.
  • Ensure that children remove their bike helmets while playing on playground equipment.
  • Have children wear a neck warmer or balaclava instead of a scarf. If a child wears a scarf, tuck the ends of the scarf into their jacket and always remove the scarf when on the playground.

Get Trained

  • Remove drawstrings from the hoods, waists, and bottoms of children’s jackets and other garments. Use other closures to keep hoods fastened securely.
  • Teach children to Stop, Drop, and Roll if their clothing catches fire.
  • Ensure adequate supervision of children around fireplaces, stoves, campfires, and burning candles.

Proper supervision, safe environments, hazard awareness, and participating in age-appropriate activities all help reduce the risk of clothing related injury to children.

INJURIES ARE NOT ACCIDENTS… THEY ARE PREDICTABLE AND PREVENTABLE!
