Greetings!
We are making many changes at Active. Our Focus Group is helping us reach out further into the community; we are in the process of changing the layout of our newsletter and developing our website to be more user-friendly; and we are continuing to offer more opportunities for you to reap the benefits of everything we have to offer. Our recent 28 day challenge brought in some new clients who have done a tremendous job of dealing with change. The group has shed a significant amount of weight and are exercising, some for the first time and some for an additional push. All in all, it's been a great 28 days and we are very proud of everyone!
Even though these are all positive changes, I still find myself a bit nervous, anxious, and generally out of my comfort zone. We are, by nature, creatures of habit. It's difficult to step out of "the known", even if we know the change is for the better. When it comes to our health and bodies, it's the same thing. We are often tempted to stay with what we know is easy or comfortable, versus trying something new - whether it be a recipe, a class, or finding a new doctor.
This month I want you to challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone. Here are some of the new classes/programs we are offering in February, so this may be a great place to start!
- 8 week Pilates mat class with Ruby on Tuesday at 5:30pm now in session
- Active's Power 90 Challenge starting February 4
- Total Body Conditioning with Dave - Wednesday at 9:00am
- Pilates for Athletes
Stay warm,

Pilates for Athletes
| | There has been a lot of press lately about yoga and I am a true advocate of yoga, however, I can't imagine using just one form of exercise to develop an athlete or anyone else for that matter. Pilates offers the fundamentals of what every athlete needs: core training, overall stability, and increased flexibility. We want to start a Pilates for Athletes program at Active so that we can provide our youth with proper instruction and a solid foundation which is going to help them learn to work with their bodies, reducing the risk of injury and adding longevity to their careers. If you have an athlete in your home, play in a club or select sport program, or play on a school-sponsored team, please ask around and see what is the level of interest in Pilates. We hope to get something started this spring! Thanks for your support.

Super 8 Shout Out!
|
| |
Shout-out to Doug Davidoff, Patty Gould, Penny Sange and Jenny Wellschlager for the dedication they show to their workouts. So far they are leading the pack in our Super 8 club. Super 8 was created to recognize and encourage clients to come to the studio at least eight or more times per month.
Staying healthy takes commitment and consistency and these four people are leading the way, but it's not too late to join. Let us know if you are attending this frequently and we will add you to the club, and you will have the opportunity to be in the running for our "Biggest Winner" title at the six month mark.
Way to go guys and gals. Keep it up!

Jenny Wellschlager!
Like many of our clients, Jenny comes to us because of the intimate and customized classes and expert trainers we have at Active. Since 2009, Jenny has been doing Pilates with trainer Daphne twice a week. "Daphne is a Pilates scholar. Her sense of discipline and humor make for a winning combination." Jenny also appreciates Daphne's ongoing encouragement when she hits a wall and her creativity in making each class seem like "new." The respect is mutual. "Jenny has become very strong because she is a dedicated student. She's also so much fun to teach because she brings along her sense of humor," shares Daphne. For Jenny, Active stands apart because of its small classes, knowledgeable staff, and its keen ability to create work-outs specific and unique to the individual. When Jenny isn't doing Pilates, swimming or spinning, she is often playing with her five active grandchildren. She's also enrolled in AACC's Interior Design program. Thank you, Jenny, for being such a loyal client and an inspiration for us all!
(Jenny's husband, Sam, is also a member of our facility!) |
A World of Whole Grains by Sue Singleton of Healthy Lifestyle Consulting
| | Many fashionable diet theories today are advising people to avoid carbohydrates, naming them as a culprit in America's obesity crisis. This advice is a huge and faulty generalization. By looking at the delicate, thin bodies of Japanese people, who consume high-carbohydrate diets composed of large amounts of rice and starchy vegetables, it's impossible to conclude that all carbohydrates lead to weight gain.
