| AT THE SKILLS OFFICE... | | |
The new year is off to a great start. With 90 days until the Provincial and National Skills Canada Competitions we are well positioned to bring you once again great events.
In March our first of nine Regional Skills Canada Competitions (RSCC) will be hosted. We thank our great RSCC hosts, organizers and Regional Technical Committee Volunteers for bringing the Skills Movement across the province. This year over 90 individual contest will be hosted. The planning, material, equipment and facilities required to host that many events would not be possible without the great support from our many education, government, labour and industry partners and volunteers.
Our Education Coordinator, Drew Ziprick has been on the road bringing the Skills Energy to students and teachers. His innovative presentation has been met with great response, and we are delighted to bring our message to students.
Our new website will be busy this February as registration opens for the high school Regional Competitions on Feb 13 at 8 a.m. and Provincial Competitions on Feb 27 at 8 a.m.
We look forward to seeing our Provincial Technical Committee members on March 16, 2012 in Red Deer. A great gathering of 150 of our great volunteers planning another terrific Provincial Skills Canada Competition.

| BRING SKILLS TO YOUR CLASSROOM | | |
The Skills Canada Alberta team is excited to bring the Skills Movement to junior and senior high classrooms. Our Education Coordinator, Drew Ziprick, is touring the province to meet with students and teachers to talk about opportunities in the trades and technologies. Drew has an Education Degree from the University of Alberta, and is a foreman scaffolder.
He will be sharing information on our Regional, Provincial, National and WorldSkills Competitions, and will also be taking it a step further by promoting trade and technology careers.
The presentation is 30 - 45 minutes in length, that incorporates an innovative visual and interactive presentation.
This is a great way of getting your students excited about upcoming competitions and career paths. Share the excitement of the Skills Movement with your administration and encourage your school to support the talented students that participate in our Regional and Provincial Skills Canada Competitions.

20 YEARS LATER ST JOES STILL A SKILLS LEADER
| | |
In 1992, St Joseph High School in Edmonton hosted the first Provincial Skills Canada Competition. With 80 students in 12 events it was just the beginning to tremendous idea that would spread across the province.
Now with 19 provincial competitions, countless regionals, four nationals and a WorldSkills Competition under our belt there is no doubt Alberta Skills Movement is stronger than ever.
Two of the many students from St. Joseph preparing to put on a great show at the Skills Canada Competitions in 2012 are Elizabeth Higgs and Michael Fowler. The Grade 12 students placed 8th and 13th at the Provincial Skills Canada competition in last two years, and hope to place higher this year, which would allow them to compete at the National level.
Elizabeth and Michael see their previous experience as something that makes them stronger competitors, and they encourage others to keep trying if they don't win. "Competing is exhilarating, and the opportunity to test your skills in a timed environment is great experience for real-world situations," said Michael.
Lyle Cruise, their trainer and communication technologies teacher at St. Joes, has been a trainer for Skills Competitions for 15 years in various events. He has also been a member of the Provincial Technical Committee for TV/Video Production for the last four years. Like many others, he's excited to see how Elizabeth and Michael will place this year.
