Regional Skills Canada Competitions
Changes to the High School Carpentry, Culinary Arts and Welding Competitions

To meet the increasing requests by students to compete at the Provincial Skills Competition, high school students must qualify at a Regional Skills Canada Competition to compete at the Provincial Skills Competition in Carpentry, Culinary Arts and Welding.

Building on the success of the fully regionalized process in 2008 for Welding, all Carpentry and Culinary Arts students must compete at their Regional Skills Canada Competition to qualify for the Provincial Skills Competition.

Teachers will not be able to reserve spots for their students in these three events for provincials.

Regional Skills Canada Competitions will take place throughout the winter and spring of 2009.

Online registration for the Provincial Skills Competition will open at 7:30am, Tuesday, February 24, 2009.

Regional Skills Canada Competitions will be hosted in:

New Staff at Skills Canada Alberta

Skills Canada Alberta is pleased to announce two new staff to the team:

Kari Zral is our new Event Coordinator, responsible for competitor registration, the Young Women Exploring Trades and Technologies Conference, and Team Alberta.  Kari joins us from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training. 

Jesse Murphy, formerly of Fun Team Alberta, is the new Program Coordinator.  Jesse's major role is to manage the logistics, equipment and materials required for the Provincial Skills Competition and coordinate the Regional Skills Canada Competitions.

Robotics at the 2009 PSC

Skills Canada Alberta is pleased to add a high school Robotics competition to the 2009 Provincial Skills Competition (PSC).

We are currently accepting registration for the Robotics competition.  Visit the Robotics Competition scope page for registration information.
Alberta Now Has Eight Members on Team Canada

Thanks to additional support from partners and the confirmation in September that this contest would be hosted at the 2009 WorldSkills Competition, Skills/Compétences Canada announced that Canada will participate in an additional event at WorldSkills Calgary 2009, Telecommunication Distribution Technology.

After a run off on November 21. 2008 at SAIT, Alberta's Daniel Reid earned a spot on Team Canada and will compete at the 40th WorldSkills Competition in Calgary.  Alberta now has eight members on Team Canada!
New Online Tools for Students
World of Skills


The Government of Alberta has launched a new interactive website tool that provides insight into "The World of Skills!" 

The video-based resource features interviews with secondary and post-secondary students as they participate in the 2008 Provincial and Canadian Skills Competitions, in addition to:

· video of officials and coaches explaining what it takes to compete in these competitions

· a tool that World of Skillscan screen capture any video or still image in the resource

· links to various skills-related websites and photo galleries of students in action at skills competitions

· textual information about the competitors and their educational programs

The World of Skills resource is available in both English and French.

Post-Secondary Competitors at the Provincial Skills Competition
Apply before January 5

Post-secondary students in the trades and technologies are encouraged to apply to compete at the 2009 Provincial Skills Competition. 

Apprentices and technology students that were born on or after Jan 1, 1988 can apply to participate in the upcoming competition.  They will be contacted by April 1, 2009 to confirm that they have been selected to compete.

Teachers, instructors and parents are strongly encouraged to share the opportunity with eligible students.
