Candle Lighting Service at Mount Auburn
We cordially invite you to participate in our seasonal
candle lighting service. We hold this program every
year to set aside time to remember the lives of those
who have gone before us and to experience the
uniqueness of Mount Auburn as a memorial of beauty
and tranquility.
Candles will be available at cost for those who wish to
light a candle in honor of someone they would like to
remember. Weather permitting, we will place the
lighted candles in nearby Asa Gray Garden after the
service. This service is free to the public and
will begin at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, December 18th, in
Story Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Horticultural Highlight
A small, deciduous, ornamental tree of the
Rosacea
family, the Sorbus alnifolia, commonly referred
to as
the Korean Mountain Ash, has smooth gray
bark.
Truly "a tree for all seasons," the Korean Mountain Ash
produces creamy-white flowers in the spring;
glossy-green leaves throughout summer; golden to
burgundy foliage in the fall; and reddish-orange fruit
which last all winter long.
Not a true Ash, the Sorbus alnifolia (from Alnus
meaning Alder and folia meaning leaves) is Number
101 on Mount Auburn's "Most Unusual Trees" Map
and grows just outside the Administration Building, a
few yards to the east of the Mount Auburn Street gate,
and, deeper inside the Cemetery, on the south side of
Fir Avenue.
The bright berries of the tree near the Administration
Building - pictured to the left above - are popular with
thrushes, cedar waxwings, many other varieties of
birds throughout winter at Mount Auburn.

"...A voice, a chime, a chant sublime..."
A Caroling Event at Mount Auburn. Please
join us for this event to celebrate the coming of winter
through poetry and song. While strolling through
Mount Auburn's grounds, we will sing carols and read
poetry appropriate for the season.
We will include visits to the graves of Phillips Brooks,
the Rector of Boston's Trinity Church and the author
of "O Little Town of Bethlehem," and poet Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow, author of the
poem "Christmas Bells."
We will end the walk with warm refreshments. Bring
your enthusiasm and your caroling
voices. This event is free to the public and will
begin at
1:30 PM on Saturday, December 15th.
