Mount Auburn Cemetery: Celebrating 175 Years
Please join us on Wednesday, January 24, 2007
for
Recovering a Musical Culture
- a lecture about the musical life of Boston
between 1875-1925, given by Steven
Ledbetter,
musicologist and former program notes annotator for
the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
For the second lecture in our seven-part
series "Facets of Mount Auburn: Celebrating 175
Years of a Boston Jewel," Steven Ledbetter will be
including some pre-recorded performances of
works by composers buried at Mount Auburn.
The program is free to the public and will begin
promptly at 6:00 PM in the Rabb
Auditorium of the Boston Public Library in Copley
Square, followed by a reception with the
lecturer and a chance to enter to win Mount Auburn
related raffle prizes, including Mount Auburn
Cemetery's Reflections audio driving tour,
Jacob Bigelow's History of Mount Auburn
Cemetery, a copy of the Consecration Dell
Guide and a special item related to lecture to be
revealed later.
Space is limited and registration is requested. Please
call 617-607-1995 or visit www.mountauburn.org to
register for this event. To ensure a seat in the

Horticultural Highlight
Begin the new year by visiting the Malus
‘Donald Wyman’ Crabapple Cultivar, now
bright with color on the eastern edge of Mount
Auburn's Halcyon Lake.
Noticed by plant lovers throughout the spring for its
lush white flowers bursting forth from delicate pinkish
buds, it is also quite striking during these gray days
of January. The tree is now full of red, berry-like
crabapples, enlivening the winter landscape.
The Malus ‘Donald Wyman’ Crabapple Cultivar
is
named for the late Dr. Donald Wyman, famed
horticulturalist for the Arnold Arboretum and author
of several books on trees, shrubs and gardening.

January Program
"Conifers: Surviving our Harsh Winters with
Grace" - A Walking Tour with Dennis Collins, Curator
of Plant Collections, Mount Auburn
Now that the "flowering plants" that dominate the
stage during the growing season have become
dormant for winter - it's time to see another group of
plants shine!
Mount Auburn's conifer collection is notable for its
diversity (nearly 80 different types) and depth (more
than 1,500 plants). Join us for a walk around the
Cemetery to see and learn about some of the many
conifers that make up this ancient and sometimes
underappreciated group of plants. Saturday,
January 27 at 2 PM. Dress for the weather!
$5 per person for members of the Friends and
$10 per person for nonmembers.
