Summit Overview

 

          

Since 1989, BMX has been a sanctuary for thousands to express, heal, strategize, develop leadership skills, overcome past traumas, enhance their critical thinking and become clear assets to their respective communities, all in a culturally affirming and self-loving way.

 

    

The purpose of this retreat is to affirm and/or enhance the leadership capacity and interest of diverse (same-gender-loving (SGL), bisexual, gay-identified and allies) Black men.

 

Who is invited: Leadership-minded, pro-active, Black SGL and bisexual young adult and adult males, and allies - from everyday Brothers to the highly "accomplished."

• Connect with, honor and be affirmed by Black men from across the country and globe

• Expand your network

• Share assessments of the 'state' of your local community or social network with other Black men  

• Give and receive feedback

• Interact with known or experienced leaders to develop a plan of action and strategies that could assist you in building infrastructure and skills to advance your work in community

• Increase your capacity to improve the health, well-being and prevention of health threats disproportionately impacting same-gender-loving (SGL), bisexual, gay-identified, and other Black men who are sexually intimate with other men

• Learn more about yourself, and your relationship to Self-Love and Cultural Respect

The BMX National Annual Leadership Summit & Retreat has SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE! BMX National is very pleased to be able to offer these scholarships to people who need them. A Scholarship will cover retreat cost and flight.  Receiving a scholarship requires submission of an essay or a video of any length that describes the state of your local (and or a national perspective) of the Black and SGL community.  Please send either to BMXNational@gmail.com.

The primary focus would be your approach - from a leadership perspective - on how to advance or transform the community.  The BMX National Annual Leadership Summit & Retreat is offering 4 days filled with opportunities to engage experienced leaders, educators, mentees and mentors.  Retreat topics will include: Recipes for Constructive Relationships with Black men, Unlearning Unconstructive Thinking and Impulses, Self-Love and Risk Reduction, SGL History, The Essential Power of Self-Reflection & Personal Responsibility, Black SGL Healing 101, Leadership in Action, and The Benefits of Critical Thinking and Cultural Affirmation.

 

 

THE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 6th, 2011. 

Retreat discounts are determined by income, or ability to pay.

 

Participate in all sorts of activities to be added to your leadership or personal tool box, and meet a supportive community of other SGL, bisexual and gay identifying Black men and allies with lived experience.

 

The retreat will guide participants toward understanding the importance of self-love and positive energy - when it comes to relationships, success, health, well-being and leadership.  Participants will also engage the importance of attaining energetic order - mind, body, consciousness and spirit, to acquire spiritual clarity and the attitude necessary to achieve power and control of destiny.

  

 

 

BMX Mission Statement

  

THE BLACK MEN'S XCHANGE (BMX) was founded in 1989 by activist, writer and behavioral health expert Cleo Manago, as an instrument of healing and empowerment for same gender loving (SGL) and bisexual African descended men. The mission of the Black Men's Xchange (BMX) is to affirm, heal, educate, unify and promote well-being and critical thinking among Black people - 18 and up - diverse in sexuality, class, culture and philosophy.  Black Men's Xchange (BMX) conducts activities that promote healthy self-concept, sexual health, constructive decision making, and cultural affirmation among same-gender-loving (SGL), bisexual and heterosexual Black populations. BMX affirms and educates Black men (and the community at-large) while providing tools for self-determination, community responsibility, self-actualization and the prevention of health threats (e.g. HIV, isolation, substance and other addictions, and mental instability). BMX creates an environment that advances black culture and involves identifying and unlearning ingrained anti-homosexual and anti-black male and female conditioning.

   

 

BMX is built on a philosophy that embraces same gender loving experience as intrinsic to everyday Black life.  Integral to BMX's approach is the understanding that, in order to decrease internal and external anti-homosexual thinking, and demystify differences around diverse ways of living and loving Black people must engage in supportive dialogue with each other and the community.

 

 
At BMX we believe that self-determination is crucial in achieving success toward healing and empowerment.  We understand that our cultural and experiential uniqueness requires a uniquely focused and precise approach.  Affirming strategies born out of our own experience is powerful; hence, the adoption of the terms, Black, African-American and Same Gender Loving (SGL)
