crossThe Season of Lent

at Holy Angels

Ash Wednesday February 17, 2010
Even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning; Rend your hearts, not your garments, and return to the Lord, your God. For gracious and merciful is he, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment. - Joel 2:12-13
Dear Parishioner

In the early Church, those who wished to be baptized spent an intense period of preparation prior to the event itself.  This retreat was a 40 day journey patterned after the time that Jesus spent in the desert fasting and praying.  Eventually, the entire Church joined in the journey of these men and women and Lent became a time of renewal for everyone in the Church.  The early leadership of the Church chose an Old English word - lencten - to name these forty days.  The word sounds like lengthen and is perfectly suited to the time of year when the daylight hours increase little by little.  The emphasis of this season is on our baptismal call and its themes include the cross, water, desert, darkness and light.  Any penance we take on during this time should help us renew our faith.  Besides the traditional practices of prayer, fasting and the giving of alms, you may wish to include: attending daily Mass more often, doing spiritual reading, stopping by in the Church for quiet prayer, praying the Stations of the Cross, celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation, volunteering at a hunger center or becoming more active in giving voice to your faith in political life.  May this holy and sacred season help us grow more and more into the image and likeness of Christ, our savior and redeemer!
