Welcome to the July edition of TeenLife Boston Connections. TeenLife Boston is committed to providing middle and high school students access to rewarding and enriching opportunities beyond school, right here in Greater Boston.  

Summer is here, and this month's edition features a cover article on what FREE or relatively inexpensive activites are offered in the Boston area for teens. We are also featuring an announcement from Boston University's CityLab Academy, a great tuition-free academic program for recent high school graduates.

Summer Activities in Boston

Looking for something fun and inexpensive to do this summer? Here are some great events in and around Boston that are attractive to teens and/or great options for the whole family. Please note: each title contains an active link to the event's website where more information can be accessed.

Free Thursdays @ The ICA
Thursdays, 5pm-9pm in South Boston. Thanks to Target, Thursday nights at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) are FREE from 5-9pm. Contemporary art exhibits are on display for your enjoyment, including visual art, music, and film.

WBOS Free Summer Concert Series
Thursdays, July12 - August 16, 5:30pm at Copley Square. WBOS hosts free summer concerts in front of historic Trinity Church in Copley Square. Performers include the Cat Empire, Fountains of Wayne, and Matt Nathanson.

Boston Cannons Lacrosse
July - August at Harvard Stadium. Come cheer on the Cannons, Boston's professional lacrosse team as they take on opponents in Major League Lacrosse in Cambridge. Tickets start at $10.

Life is Good Festival
Saturday, July 19 from 11am-6 pm on Boston Common. The cost is free, so come enjoy live music, backyard food, and fun & games for both kids and adults. 100% of the funds raised are donated to the Life Is Good Kids Foundation which helps kids in need.

Boston Young Contemporaries Juried Exhibition 
Friday, July 18 - Friday, August 22, 10am-6pm in Boston. The 808 Gallery is exhibiting the contemporary art of New England's emerging young artists. Paintings, photography, video, and sculptures will all be on display. Come and support Boston's up and coming artists.

Larz Anderson Auto Museum Lawn Events
Saturdays and Sundays,  July & August in Brookline. Larz Anderson Auto Museum is home to "America's oldest car collection" and now hosts various events open to the public. Prices for lawn events are $5 for adults, $3 for students, seniors, and children ages 6-16, and free for children 6 and under. Some of the Lawn Events include, Micro Mini Car Day, Extinct Autos & Bicycles Day, Miata Day, and Hot Rod, Gasser, & Muscle Car Day.

Films for Teens
Fridays at 2:30pm at the Copley Branch Library, Rabb Lecture Hall. The movies include Batman on July 18, Circle of Friends on August 8 and School Ties on August 22.

Shakespeare on the Boston Common
July 18 - August 3, 8pm (
Tuesdays - Saturdays)
& 7pm (Sundays). Come watch a free performance of "As You Like It", one of Shakespeare's greatest comedies, at the Parkman Bandstand.

Italia Unita's Annual Italian Festival
July 18, 19, & 20 from 6pm-11pm (Friday) and 3pm-11pm (
Saturday & Sunday). Come see live music, play bocce, and enjoy rides for free and celebrate Italian culture in Central Square, East Boston.

ArtBeat 2008, Somerville Arts Council
July 18 - 19 in Davis Square. This year's ArtBeat theme is green, so come watch music, performing arts and craft, dance, & theater with a green twist, and enjoy some food too. The events are free with a suggested donation of $3 to support the Somerville Arts Council.

Japanese Taiko Drumming, Springstep
Saturday, July 19, 10:30am-12pm at Springstep in Medford. Come watch a traditional Japanese Taiko drum performance, then get a chance to play too. The event is $8 for adults and $6 for youth if you preregister, or $8 for youth and $10 for adults at the door.

Citywide Celebration at the Franklin Park Zoo
Tuesday, August 5 from 5pm-8pm in Dorchester. Come spend a night at the Franklin Park Zoo with Mayor Thomas Menino and Police Commissioner Ed Davis with free zoo attractions, food, and entertainment. This event is a National Night Out celebration, unifying communities throughout the City of Boston.

Free August Moon Festival
Sunday, August 10 from 11am-5pm. Come to Chinatown to celebrate the end of the harvest season. There will be food, dancing, martial arts, and musicians.

Cambridge Carnival International
Sunday, August 24 from 12pm-7pm in Kendall Square. There is a parade, live music, exotic arts & crafts, dancing, and free food to celebrate fun and cultural diversity. The art and music are rooted in African tradition, so come enjoy this Caribbean-style carnival.

ZUMIX Free Summer Concerts
July 1 - September 7

As part of ZUMIX's effort to build community through music, we will be hosting our 15th annual East Boston free summer concert series. ZUMIX holds two concerts a week, in East Boston's beautiful waterfront Piers Park on Sunday evenings from 5-7PM, and on Tuesday evenings from 5-7PM in the new Bremen Street park outside of the airport stop. These concerts are free outdoor events and are for the entire community. Both locations are accessible by T at the Maverick Square and Airport Stations respectively. The series is kicked off and concluded with big festivals, the Seaport Festival and our Harvest Festival both from 2-6PM. Come early and bring a picnic!
BOOYAH! Teen TeamWorks
July 7-July 24
 
Complete 20+ hours of community service, meet new friends, learn about the issues that face your community and then take action to address them! Each morning team members will meet at Boston Cares' office in the Financial District and then will travel to a different project site each afternoon.  Programming will begin at 10:30am and run until approximately 3pm, depending on the afternoon service project. Session 1: July 7th to July 10th. Session 2: July 21st to July July 24th.
The Young Entrepreneurs Brunch
July 12

It gives us great pleasure to invite you to the TYE Brunch to celebrate the successful completion of the 3rd TYE $10k Business Plan Competition and the Launch of the new 2008-2009 program. The Brunch will be held on Saturday, July 12 at 9:30am to 12:00pm at Battery Ventures, 930 Winter Street, Waltham, MA. We want to share with you the highlights of this year's program and our big plans for the future.

Jewish Family & Children's Service: Sunday Swim & Sing
July 27, August 3 & 24

Come join us on Sunday afternoon at the Newton JCC!  We are looking for volunteers to work

Teen Voices: Pens of Power
August 2

Teen Voices host Pens of Power, A Writing Conference Celebrating the Written Word. Join over 100 Boston teen girls for a Saturday devoted to the power of writing. Women poets, novelists, and journalists will lead exciting workshops and talk about why they write. Plus, free lunch, prizes, and entertainment. Green School
Green School is looking for Middle/High School students that are interested in starting an Environmental Club in their school community.  If your school already has an Environmental Club, and you are looking for additional projects, please contact President/Founder Robin Organ via email or by calling (508) 272-9653. Summer Program Spotlight
 
CityLab Academy at BU

CityLab Academy at Boston University:
Application deadline July 31

Attention High School graduates and GED holders!  If you do not yet have plans for college this coming September, consider attending CityLab Academy, a free 2-semester academic and biomedical lab job training program at Boston University.  You will receive 12 free undergraduate BU credits and a certificate in Biomedical Laboratory Science for successfully completing four courses.   Classes are held four days a week for two semesters--September to May-- and you can enroll in either the evening or morning program.

We are currently recruiting for the class that starts September 2008; the deadline to submit applications is July 31.  To find out more information, we invite you to attend an Open House on Tuesday, July 15 from 3:00pm - 5:00pm at 801 Albany St in Boston. Volunteer Opportunities

Science Club for Girls
July 8 - August 19

Kwong Kow Chinese School is recruiting teenage (grades 7-12) Junior Assistants for our program. Junior Assistants (JA's) will be expected to volunteer on Tuesdays for about two hours each week. Clubs run from July 8 until August 19. JA's will receive a small stipend at the end of the eight weeks.

JA's will be responsible for helping the adult volunteers with setting up before clubs, running the clubs, and cleaning up afterwards. JA's are expected to act as leaders by introducing some of the science club activities and working with the girls each week to help them complete the activities. There will be 10 girls in each club, grades K-2. Each club will have 1-2 adult volunteers and 1-2 JA's.

American Red Cross: Car Wash
July 12

Volunteers needed to help with The American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay Youth Services' car wash. All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Program.

East End House
July 12
East End House, a non-profit multi-service community center serving the needs of low-income families and individuals in Cambridge and the Greater Boston area, is looking for volunteers in the following programs: 

Community Clean-Up Day Saturday July 12th, 10am-3pm. Duties: helping us scrub, paint, dust, rake, plant, and have fun!

Food Pantry
Tuesdays 9am-2pm & Fridays 9am-12pm. Duties: greeting consumers, helping consumers fill out forms, stocking food pantry, packing grocery bags, unpacking and receiving food deliveries, cleaning the pantry, and taking inventory.


Farmer's Market
First Monday & Wednesday of each month, 12-3:30pm and 1-4:30pm, respectively. East End House brings fresh produce and canned foods, as well as entertainment, to two low-income housing complexes for seniors and people with disabilities.  Duties: transporting food, setting up market, checking consumers in, manning food tables, helping consumers pack grocery bags, general event management.


Sunrise Club- Senior Citizens Each Monday and Wednesday, 10:30-12pm.  The Sunrise Club is a group of senior citizens from the community who meet twice a week to engage in social activities.  We are looking for people with specific talents or skills that would be suitable for a presentation, workshop, or activity with the Sunrise Club.

Habitat for Humanity in West Newton
July 16-19 
Teens 16 and older can volunteer for a "build day" at the Habitat construction site in West Newton.  (Those who are 16 and 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult.)  Volunteers - both groups and individuals - work under the direction of a construction manager to build affordable housing for qualified families. Build days with 8-12 volunteers are typically held on Wednesday, Thursday, and either Saturday or Sunday.  Prior construction experience is NOT necessary, but first-time volunteers are required to attend an Orientation Session.  You can register for an Orientation Session online or by calling

For younger teens, there are other ways you can get involved:  by organizing a car wash with proceeds going to Habitat, by delivering cookies or brownies to the volunteer work crew, or by participating in the Genesis Battlegreen Run on November 2.
Volunteer for Ethos
July-August
Accompany seniors on their weekly visits to the Farmers Market in Copley Square. Ride the buses with them, Board the senior buses at several locations:
   -Mattapan Sq
   -Jamaica Plain
Escort and carry the patrons' bags during thier shopping spree and upon return to their apartments. Some stipends are available.

Cradles to Crayons 
Organize a summer fun drive and help make a huge difference in the lives of children in need. Collect children's clothing, shoes, books, toys and baby items by asking friends and neighbors to clean out their closets. Host a luau and ask partygoers to bring donations of flip-flops and swimsuits. Email Lindsay Jensen or visit their website to get involved.

Room to Grow

Room to Grow is looking for students 17 and up (parents are welcome too) to support our mission: providing parents raising babies in poverty with one-on-one parenting support and essential baby items throughout their child's first three years of life.

Detail-oriented volunteers are needed to help us sort and organize baby clothing, toys, books and other donated equipment. For more information, please contact Golsa.
