Life Changing Ministry - in focus!

Summer camp at Asbury Hills is about Christian birth, growth and renewal.  Camp provides a place for campers to know God in new and amazing ways and enter into a new or expanded relationship with the Creator!  We are seeking to be clearly focused on our purpose this summer with some intentional planning.  Each morning, all campers will experience a worship and teaching time led by our spiritual leader for the week.  These times will be interactive, yet meaningful as we focus on the scripture for the day.  Each evening, all campers will worship together in the beautiful settings at Asbury Hills.  These times of worship will be led by our spiritual leader for the week.  We will be intentional about naming God's presence in our midst and naming those opportunities for faith decisions.  Camp is a place where lives are changed - be sure to be here this summer!

Looking for a Few Good Spiritual Leaders

As we plan for camp with a purpose, we are still looking for pastors or youth directors who would be willing to serve for two weeks this summer as a spiritual leader for camp.  This ministry will involve leading two teaching times each day and two worship experiences.  Jody Oates, our Executive Director, will be shaping these experiences and working with our pastors to lead these times.  If you are interested in exploring this opportunity, contact Jody at or at 877.255.7559.

Cabin Time Giving New Meaning to the Phrase "Cabin Time"

Most of you probably already know that new cabins are on the way for summer 2009, complete with new bunk beds, and bathrooms in the cabins!  This summer everyone is going to get the chance to leave their mark on our present summer camp cabins.  Each family group will get the chance to decorate a portion of the outside of the cabins.  So bring some painting clothes and starting thinking about what artistic creation you will leave on the side of the cabin.  Remember this is a one time opportunity! Summer 2008 will be the only summer that campers are allowed to write and paint on the outside of the cabins.  This summer is your last chance to stay in our faithful Ridgetop and Village cabins.  Don't miss it.  Come join the fun.

Summer Camp 2009 - Partnering with Your Church

Imagine how great it would be to bring all your youth to camp in the summer, leaders of your church come along, the incredible week of camp happens God changes lives, and you are there to experience it!  Then you and your kids go home and you continue to build on the life-changing work of camp with your young people throughout the year.   Your church will have an effective and powerful discipleship system for kids!!  This is a new model of partenerships we want to explore with a small group of churches next summer, 2009.  If you would like to explore this concept with us, contact Jody at joates@sccampsandretreats,org or at 877.255.7559.  While the commitment is great, the rewards are holy!!

Trail and Waters 2009
tree climbing with dad

Seeking the ultimate getaway?  Leave the busy world behind for 12 days and 13 nights.  Trail and Waters offers you the opportunity to cover over 50 miles of the South Carolina mountains by foot and by water.  You'll camp out each night as you make your way from Oconee county, across Lake Jocassee and finally end up right back at Asbury Hills.  Throughout the day you will be challenged physically and spiritually as you listen for God's voice without the noise of day to day life.  Come join us for this amazing camp!

Trail and Waters Camp

Last year I finished ninth grade and went to Asbury Hills for my ninth straight year!  I had the chance to do the Palmetto Challenge Camp Trail and Waters.  Nine campers and two counselors started the two-week trip at Oconee State Park, hiked the Foothills Trail to Lake Jocassee, canoed to a waterfall, and then made the way back on the trail to Asbury Hills.

There were 3 guys and 6 girls campers in our group. Justin and Lindsey were our counselors.  We chose our campsites each night along the trail.  One night we slept at the top of the waterfall.  Some nights we slept under the stars, with no cover.  We carried everything we needed for a few days of hiking, and we would pick up more food and supplies at designated stops.

As we hiked those two weeks, we really had the chance to get to know each other.  We were from different parts of SC.  We built camps together, cooked all our meals together, and played games in the evenings.   In the evenings we did devotions.

What an awesome way to experience God and all of creation!  It was awesome that we could sleep on the edge of a cliff, look across the hollow, and see another campfire far in the distance.  We walked across the Horse Pasture River on a long suspension bridge.  We hiked up and down Sassafras Mountain, the highest mountain in SC.  That was a hard hike.  We were constantly weaving in and out of South Carolina as we hiked the trail.  We saw a lot of odd plants and fungi that we wouldn't see if we weren't out in the wilderness.  We didn't see one animal along the way, which was a good thing!

When we got back to camp after hiking 52 miles - we were dirty and tired and just wanted to take a shower!  This camp was the best!  I am glad that I had the opportunity to spend two weeks at camp, making new Christian friends.

Camp Store

Hey Y'all!   Just a reminder to add your camp store money into your account when you register online.  We suggest an amount of $20 with a cap of $50.  Refunds will not be given this year for unused funds, rather we will be using the left over money to purchase some rockin' new recreation equipment for 2009.  Be sure to check the next Newsletter for the "BIG REVEAL", where we will be letting everyone know what our new recreation item will be!

We are in need of a few more churches to step up and commit to a project this spring.  We have projects that are "no cost" options for groups as well as projects that "cost".  We have three remaining projects which have a cost attached to them as well as several no cost projects.   They projects with a cost are as follows:

Picnic Shelter Renovation:  The picnic shelter is in need of a little face lift.  We need a new roof,  six new 6x6 poles,  and some built in benches around the fire circle by the shelter.

Tree House Roof Construction:  Our tree house is in need of a new roof.  We are looking for metal roofing, lumber, and some laborers to put it up.

Camp Store Construction:  We are in need of a new camp store building.  We are hoping for a concession style building with rough dimensions of 12X12.  For this project we need lumber, roofing, electrical & plumbing work.

If your church is able to help with any of these projects, please contact us as soon as possible at 864.836.3711.  Thank you for your help!
