A hot topic in the natural products industry right
now is parabens. Parabens are man made
preservatives found in many if not most skin
products. They are extremely effective as
preservatives in lotions, creams, shampoos and
conditioners. Without preservatives a product can
and will go rancid quickly, growing bacteria and
mold. Soaps and balms do not have the same rancid
issues that lotions and shampoos have because of the
lack of water in their composition. Parabens have
been linked in one study to cancer, they were found
in the beast tissue of several breast cancer
patients. At first this study caused great concerns
and manufacturers began re-evalutating their use but
now the study itself is in question for validity and
conclusiveness because several other chemicals were
found as well in the tissues. It is hard to say who
is correct or what is worse, a chance one chemical
possibly has a connection to cancer or the
inevibility of bacterial and fungal exposure.
Grapefruit seed extract has been studied as an
alternative to parabens but was discovered to have
parabens added to it. At this time we are phasing
grapefruit seed extract out of our products and
using Vitamin E exclusively. Vitamin E is a safe,
all natural and effective preservative for soaps and
balms.
