GLBT Businesses Unite!
|
 |
The Center is proud to introduce its newest program, the Pride Business Alliance. Combining our established membership program with a new innovative business initiative offers local gay and gay friendly individuals, businesses, and organizations diverse venues through which they can network and connect with both GLCCB members and the larger community.
The Pride Business Alliance will connect Baltimore's GLBT community in unprecedented ways. It will provide quarterly networking mixers throughout Baltimore, year-long exposure through our e-newsletters, website, bi-weekly newspaper Gay Life, and events. Additionally, it will offer alliance members new channels to access the communities they serve. Click here to find out more about the PBA's different membership levels.
Community members will also benefit from the directory which will enable them to find the GLBT and GLBT-friendly goods and services they seek - knowing that the companies listed do business in or otherwise support the GLBT community.
Businesses that join the Pride Business Alliance also have the option of extending incentives, such as special discounts or even free services, to Center members through our Membership Program, as an added way to promote their business.
To find out more about the Pride Business Alliance, or the Membership Program, please contact Joel Rosado at (410) 837-5445 ext. 17, or via jrosado@glccb.org.

Did you know the Center has over 60 windows? Many have no shades, blinds or treatments. This can make meeting rooms and offices uncomfortably warm in the summer and less private overall.
On the "bright side," the Center is fortunate to have southern exposure, but this is where most of its windows face which can make afternoon and early evening activities almost unbearably sunny.
In an effort to help regulate our cooling bills in the summer and offer more privacy and light control to Center users year round, we have begun installing much needed aluminum blinds.
Because of the age of our building, almost all of the windows are irregular sizes and blinds must be custom ordered. This costs approximately $100 per window. If you would like to help with this effort and "sponsor" a window, please contact the Center office at (410) 837-5445, or e-mail us at info@glccb.org. Remember, any contribution you make is tax-deductible. |

Take Action!
What's
At Stake:
The denial of
marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Maryland means the denial of hundreds of vital
protections that many different-sex married couples take for granted. These
basic protections include medical decision-making rights, funeral decisions,
property ownership rights and inheritance rights. The easiest way to remedy
this discrimination is to expand the marriage laws of Maryland to include
same-sex couples.
What can you do
about it? The freedom to
marry for same-sex couples depends on you. Send a note to your legislators now
asking them to support the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act.
Tell them about your family and why marriage is important to you. If you're a
straight ally, tell them why you support the freedom to marry for same-sex
couples.

Greetings!
Happy New Year!
We hope you and your loved ones enjoyed a peaceful and happy holiday season.
Just as many begin the New Year with resolutions to better themselves or their lives, so the Center begins 2008 with renewed vigor. Last year marked the Center's 30th year of service to Baltimore's GLBT community, and 2008 in many ways will represent a new chapter in the Center's story.
Along with enhancing existing programming, we hope to introduce new ones, in addition to expanding our better-known events like Baltimore Pride and Out-rageous in 2008. Be on the lookout for some new announcements, too!
Of course, much of what we do is made possible by support from the community, both financial and in the form of volunteerism. This allows us to magnify our efforts and serve more GLBT people in more places. If you would like to be involved in any way please contact us and let us know what interests you.
Here's to a happy and prosperous 2008! |

Health and Wellness Fair
|
On Sunday January 13, 2008, the GLCCB will host a Health and
Wellness Fair, in collaboration with local instructors, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00
p.m. The cost for this four hour event will be $20 in advance, or $25 at the door.
Individuals who attend will be able to participate in beginners' and
intermediate yoga, Pilates, and seated massage. The instructors for each
session will be available to provide further information to participants on
their area of expertise. This event is structured to offer participants a "taste"
of classes and services that promote wellness and health. Yoga, Pilates, and massage all work to promote mind-body
balance and are often incorporated into holistic approaches that seek to
relieve symptoms related to disease, stress, and pain. While Yoga, Pilates, and massage are often lumped together
under the umbrella of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM),
practitioners in the medical profession incorporate these techniques into
conventional medical treatments to enhance the outcomes of patients. The
National Institutes of Health (NIH) have conducted studies that demonstrate
that individuals are able to enhance their quality of life through mind-body
strategies and therefore enhance their health. Yoga The Yoga sessions will be taught by Tim
Hurley, Registered Yoga Instructor, and Kelly O'Neal, Certified
Yoga Instructor. Yoga is the practice of asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath) with the goal of
enhancing physical and mental health. Yoga is rooted in ancient spiritual
practices that developed in India. Pilates The Pilates sessions will be taught by Shirley Eggleston,
Certified Pilates Instructor. Pilates is the practice of focusing the mind,
centering, concentration, control, and precision with the goal of strengthening
core muscles to support the spine. Pilates, as it is known today, was developed
by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century as a system of physical
fitness. Seated Massage The seated massage sessions will be provided by Jeanne
Lauber, Certified Massage Therapist. Massage is the practice of physically
manipulating tissues (muscles, tendons, skin, etc.) in order to effect a
positive change. Massage has been practiced throughout history and across civilizations.
For more information contact the GLCCB at 410-837-5445 or
visit www.glccb.org. To purchase tickets for
this event contact the GLCCB or stop by Lambda Rising Bookstore. |

Equality Maryland Urges You To Support The Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act Today
 |
|
This
is it!
Your legislators return to Annapolis next week to begin their 90-day
regular session. We have a critical window of a few days to garner cosponsors
for The Religious
Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act.
Cosponsors are an
early indication of how much support and momentum a bill has going into the
legislative session. The more cosponsors the more pressure on undecided
legislators. It is up to each and every one of us to make sure our legislators
know how important this legislation is to the security and well being of LGBT
families in Maryland. This is a critical time to contact your legislators
to express your support for ending discrimination and extending the freedom to
marry to same-sex couples.
Send the note below and then ask your
friends, co-workers, neighbors and family to do the same. We want to ensure
that legislators are welcomed to the 2008 legislative session with an inbox
full of emails from marriage equality
supporters!

Send
a letter to the following decision maker(s):
Governor Martin
O'Malley (if you live in Maryland) Your Delegate (if you live in
Maryland) Your State Senator (if you live
in Maryland)
Below
is the sample letter:
Subject: Why Civil
Marriage is Important to Me
Dear [decision
maker name here],
I am a constituent
who recognizes the dignity and worth of all Maryland families and I support expanding
marriage to include same-sex couples. I urge you to co-sponsor and support The
Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, sponsored by Sen. Britt and
Dels. Barnes and Ramirez.
This bill also explicitly affirms that no
religion or clergy would be compelled to perform or recognize these marriages.
Visit http://www.equalitymaryland.org/pdfs/rfcmpa.pdf
to read the language of the bill. At issue here is civil marriage - a marriage
license given out by the County Clerk, which brings hundreds of
state-conferred protections with it.
Marriage provides
hundreds of state-level protections and responsibilities and is essential to
strengthening families and helping children. The only way to end discrimination
in marriage is to do just that - end discrimination in marriage and support this
important piece of legislation. |

Thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
