TWIST: The Successful GLCCB Fundraiser is Back!

With the many programs and services provided to the local community through the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Baltimore, continued funding and financial support is always a critical issue when planning the year ahead. Fortunately the center is hoping to repeat and even surpass the success of last year with its second annual fundraiser, TWIST!

The event, which is to be held at the Hippo bar and dance club on Thursday, March 16th will include a variety show and silent auction, and promises to be a fun night for all. The variety show will include many local talents including a comedian, a bevy of titleholders and Baltimore's own Tia Chambers who will be appearing for her second year at the event. All of the performers will be donating their time and talents in support of the GLCCB. The silent auction will contain a wide variety of items such as collectibles, gift cards to restaurants and stores, baskets of cheer, hotel stays, and even a two night stay in Napa! Additional fun surprise items will also be on the block, so there should definitely be something for everyone.

The usual four-dollar entrance fee for Thursdays at the Hippo will get you inside, however everyone will receive four drink chips, so in essence entrance is free. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the GLCCB where they will be used to fund the center's programs and services. Event organizer, Mr. Michael Zito, takes great pride in TWIST and hopes that it will once again be an amazing success. He reminds people to "bring their checkbooks and plastic" and not to "hesitate to shop at the Hippo"! Come out to support your local GLCCB and enjoy an exciting night at TWIST!

GLCCB Receives Grant for HIV Preventive Vaccine Education Project

The Health Services Department at the GLCCB recently received a sub-contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to implement an outreach and education program to dispel myths, misinformation and misconceptions about HIV preventative vaccine research.

The funds will allow GLCCB staff and volunteers to reach out to the local community, attend community events to promote awareness, conduct community educational forums on HIV preventive vaccine research, and coordinate an HIV Vaccine Awareness Day event on May 18, 2006. These activities will be conducted by two GLCCB staff members, Mr. Gary Wolnitzek and Ms. Edith Dietz, who will be working collaboratively with the staff of the University of Maryland's project BRAVE (Baltimore Regional AIDS Vaccine Effort).

This new grant and the projects which it funds are especially exciting new developments since they will allow the LGBTQQIA community of Baltimore to have their collective voice included in the dialogue surrounding these much needed HIV prevention tools.
