GLBT Library Now Open at the Center

This month the GLCCB unveils its long-awaited GLBT library. Over the years, the Center has acquired many books, magazines, videos, and music, either on its own or through donations from community members. For much of that time the collection, numbering 1,000 - 2,000 titles, was kept in storage at the Center.

While the collection has been partially available to the community for some years, the project really got underway last summer when much of the collection was sorted and shelved by volunteers. This fall, with the help of volunteer librarians, the collection began to be catalogued and put into a database which can now be accessed via the internet. Interested persons can now browse and search for titles from anywhere.

The final step of creating the physical library is ongoing, as shelves are constructed and books are put in their places. Users will be able to visit the library by appointment and browse the collection in a comfortable setting. They may also call ahead for a particular title they found using the online search function. We are sure the library will become an important resource for the GLBT community for years to come.

The Center accepts donations of materials for the library on an ongoing basis. If you have relevant material you would like to donate please let us know.

New Five Year, Two City Study

According to Philadelphia Health Management Corporation (PHMC), Young men who have sex with men (YMSM) have unique needs for targeted HIV prevention messages. HIV infection rates among MSM remain high, particularly among men under age 30 and for African-American YMSM, whose HIV infection rates are over four times those of white YMSM.

Drugs and alcohol have been linked to increased sexual risk for HIV among MSM yet no intervention addressing substance use and sexual risk within this population has been extensively studied.

With funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) PHMC will develop, implement, and evaluate a community-level intervention for African- American and white substance using MSM between the ages of 15 and 29. The study will be conducted in Philadelphia, with Baltimore serving as a comparison community and the GLCCB serving as the local partnering agency. PHMC and the Center will collaborate to change both social norms and risk behavior using persuasive media communication and networking as primary intervention strategies.

For year one of the five year project, data will be collected through focus groups and in-depth interviews with the ultimate goal of tapping into the social and community networks through which YMSM acquire information, form attitudes, develop beliefs, and learn and practice behaviors.

Crystal Meth Anonymous

On January 4th, the GLCCB hosted its first Crystal Meth Anonymous (CMA) meeting in response to growing concern about the impact of this drug in the GLBT community. Addiction to crystal meth is a growing problem. It is cheaply manufactured and increasingly available as a "club drug" in major cities. For more information about the drug click here.

Crystal Meth Anonymous is a 12 step fellowship for those in recovery from addiction to crystal meth. There are no dues or fees for membership. Membership in CMA is open to anyone with a desire to stop using drugs. Its purpose is to help the addict to get and stay clean. CMAinB'more, as the local group is named, is a meeting of this fellowship which meets Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. at the GLCCB.
