Baltimore Pride 2005

The heat and humidity of summer are upon us, and it makes us appreciate how fortunate we were in June to have cool and clear days for Baltimore Pride 2005. Certainly, the weather played at least some role in our biggest and best Pride weekend ever.

With an estimated 10-15,000 people at the parade and block party, and over 20,000 at the Sunday festival, this year's Pride celebration was Baltimore's biggest ever. RuPaul took the stage on Saturday, and Melissa Ferrick headlined on Sunday. Both were among the scores of entertainers that raised the bar this year. There were over 200 vendors, plying everything from rainbow-emblazoned collectibles to kabobs, and many organizations distributing information and resources related to their cause.

Of course, the real credit goes to the 100+ volunteers, sponsors, and community partners that made it all possible -- proving that Baltimore can keep step with its larger regional neighbors during Pride season. A fitting tribute to our 30th Pride!

Baltimore Pride is produced by the GLCCB, and proceeds help support the Center and its programming throughout the year.

David Bohnett CyberCenter Now Open

In January 2005 the GLCCB was awarded a grant by the David Bohnett Foundation to establish a CyberCenter. Housed within the GLCCB, the CyberCenter boasts ten state-of-art IBM workstations, high-speed internet, popular software packages, printing capability, and wirless access for notebook users.

The goal of the CyberCenters, of which there are now 30 in GLBT community centers around the country, is to provide local GLBT communities access to computers and the internet to foster self- expression and individual development.

The GLCCB's David Bohnett CyberCenter will be open during administrative office hours (10-7, M-F) with classes and tutoring at posted times. Click below for schedule and pricing information.

New Youth Hotline at GLCCB

In July, 2005, the GLCCB launched a new information and referral hotline for GLBT youth. Funded by a grant from the Baltimore Community Foundation, Directing In-need Gay Youth To Services (DIGYTS) will be staffed by trained youth counselors who will provide information, referrals to services, and support to their peers.

In an effort to address the ever-increasing need for services and programming for youth and young adults, the GLCCB created DIGYTS which will augment the successful Sufficient As I aM (SAIM) youth group at the Center. DIGYTS will be staffed and will operate separately from the Center's long- standing resource and referral hotline.

The DIGYTS hotline will operate Monday - Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and between noon and 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The number is (410) 234-8057.

Bingo Raises Over $60,000

Gay Bingo recently set a milestone for the GLCCB. Since September, 2003, bingo has raised more than $60,000 in support of the Center and its programs and has become a valuable lifeline for the GLCCB throughout the year.

Hosted by the Hippo, and featuring the talents of caller Roger Dimick, bingo has achieved a bit of a cult following in Baltimore, being featured by the City Paper and the Baltimore Sun more than once. On any given Wednesday evening, bingo draws a diverse crowd to Mt. Vernon for a raucus time. This is NOT your grandmother's bingo, but she would be welcome all the same!

Gay bingo happens at the Hippo every Wednesday. Play begins at 8:30 p.m. with early bird games that feature special prizes. For more information, and the upcoming schedule of theme nights, call the Hippo at (410) 547-0069 or visit their website via the link below.
