Dear Women of Wisdom
February is here and that means - we're excited it's WOW month and we're eagerly waiting to see everyone in two weeks for a fabulous conference. It's going to be a special one being the 20th year, and we've got some amazing presenters. Every Friday at 1:00pm Pacific time I'm interviewing the WOW presenters so between now and the conference you you can learn about what our presenters will have to offer. You can listen in live, or in the archives at Voices of Women.
We had some great gatherings this month including our pre-conference dinner where we gathered with presenters, vendors, healers, artists, members and the council and committee It's great to feel the energy build before conference and share with everyone what each of us is bringing to the community. It's been quite a ride! This is my last year in a direct active capacity in leading the conference. I'm moving on to other things calling me. I have many mixed feelings as it's hard to leave working with people I love. Celebrate! Honor! Remember!
 Women of Wisdom is celebrating its 20th Conference this year. Imagine the wonderful vision of founder Kris Steinnes and how she has sustained that vision. Think of the many, many wonderful women who have led and participated in Women of Wisdom, some from the very first years and still continuing. We want to celebrate WOW, honor Kris, and congratulate YOU for your part in this great pageant of twenty years. Think of the lives changed and enriched, think of the numbers of women who have been touched by this great organization, think of your own involvement in Women of Wisdom.
To help us celebrate, we are creating a Memory Book to capture the magic of Women of Wisdom, and we invite you to help us. Please take a few moments to gather your thoughts about your memories, changes you have made because of Kris and Women of Wisdom. Then share your recollections through a brief story, memory, inspiration, vision, or appreciation you have. You can write it, share photos, share original art, or dream up your own creation that can be sent electronically and compiled into the Memory Book.
To have your creation included in the first part of the Memory Book being presented at the conference, send your work electronically no later than FEBRUARY 6 to Mosa Baczewska at mosamusic@gmail.com
Put "Memory Book" in the subject line. Photos must be 300 dpi in jpeg, png or tiff. Make text print-ready, as it will be copied and pasted. We reserve the right to edit for space.
There will be a table at the Conference to add to this Memory Book. We especially appreciate participation of those from the earlier years.

Work Exchange, Volunteers, and Scholarships
Would you like to contribute to (and experience) the Conference but are not able to be on a Committee? Do you think you won't be able to attend due to financial difficulties?
There are a variety of jobs that need to be done in order for the Conference to run smoothly and these jobs are filled 100% by volunteers. This ranges from helping out in the registration office before the Conference all the way to set up and clean up at the Conference, with everything in between.
Work Exchange is volunteer time done in exchange for workshops and evening events. An Angel Volunteer is a woman
someone who offers up her gifts and time with the true spirit of volunteerism. We are pleased to be able to offer scholarships to those that need assistance and are unable to perform Work Exchange.

Women's History you have never been taught
by Kathleen M. Bishop, Ph.D.
 Women's history is not taught in schools or universities, meaning each woman has to learn her history on her own or not at all. This Teleclass will discuss how women's history has been lost, some important facts like the Peking man is actually the Peking woman, and rewrite some of the women back into history that have made a difference in all of our lives. This course, hoped to be the first of many, will focus on how the history was lost, the importance of spirituality and healing for ancient women, as well as accomplishments of women in the arts. Suggestions and exercises will be designed to help participants re-find and re-store this history. The course facilitator will also give suggestions on resources of Women's History and creative ways to learn about women's history.
Kathleen M. Bishop, Ph.D. is a Gerontologist with a specialty in aging in people with disabilities, women, and environmental design. She has presented over 15 years on-line and over 30 years of traditional classroom teaching. Her passion is women's history, she presents frequently on topics related to women's history. She is also a published author of 'Whistling up the Wind" and is currently writing a book 'Reclaiming women's lives through diaries and letters.'

Celebrating Spirit in Community with Plants

Julie Charette Nunn, Crow's Daughter, offers this 3-session exploration in shamanic herbalism with simple practices in listening, connecting and collaborating with plants. The ancient ways of deep listening will be offered through shamanic exercises, stories, writing assignments, spending time in nature and herbl crafting. Lessons will take place in your home, in your yard, and in your surrounding community. This course is seasonal in nature and will express the unique dance of each month's energy. When you complete this course, you will see the world of plants through different eyes.

How To Keep Loving When It Isn't So Easy

Move through breakdown in your family into a breakthrough to a whole new level of love, joy and happiness!
A client recently commented that raising teenagers feels like one long, continuous struggle. How do you keep loving your teens when they are acting in not-so-lovable ways? How do you give them the freedom to grow and explore while keeping them safe and accountable? These are the questions that will stretch any mom to the limits!
At the heart of most any relationship difficulty is the simple need to be loved. As much as it can be difficult to be the mother of a teen, it can be even more difficult to be the teenager. Your kid wants and needs your love and you need to be able to package it in a way they can receive it.
Martha's story: Once again my daughter had yelled at me, run up the stairs and slammed her bedroom door. I wondered if it would help the situation to tell her how I felt as a newcomer into a family of six people (five step-children). I knocked on her door and peeked in. Letting down my defenses, I asked her, "Julie, have you ever felt all alone in a group of people?"
She lifted grief-filled eyes to mine. "All the time," she sobbed.
"Oh my dear!" I went to her bed and held her. She clung to me for at least an hour and a half.
Martha succeeded in building her relationship with her daughter because she was able to let go of being caught in the argument at the surface of the situation. With courage, faith and trust, she was willing to go to a deeper level, to connect with her daughter's heart.
At the heart level, they found common ground in feeling left out and alone. They connected in a way that opened the flow of love.
"Connection" is one skill that is essential for consistently loving relationships. It begins with connecting with your own heart first. When you are involved in a tangle with someone else, take time to sort out your own feelings and discern what you are needing. In Martha's story, she was needing acceptance and understanding.
The second step is to take your need to Divine Source. At the deepest level, you cannot get what you most need from another human being. This can only come from Source. You can make this connection by breathing into your heart, letting your self feel your vulnerability and neediness, and open your heart to Source to receive what you need.
As your heart feels cared for, you can then move through connection with the Divine Heart to connect with the heart of your child or spouse. As you connect at the heart with each other, through Divine connection, the love you both need and want is free to flow and nourish your relationship.

2012: The Year of the Channeled Message

Finding a spiritual path leads to fulfillment, especially where we can share with others of similar values. There is a smorgasbord of spiritual paths available to choose from. How do we decide which will be the most worthwhile? Do all spiritual teachers have feet of clay? For many, being told 'what to believe and what to do' is not appealing. In today's world, intelligent people seek an experience where they can learn something of benefit to themselves and others, where they can share with others and where they can make a difference! One way to do this is to speak to Spirit and listen for advice and guidance.
We are not alone with our problems. Spirit teachers are waiting patiently for us to make contact so they can transmit to us the messages that will help in every way. Channelling is the way in which these spirit teachers distribute their messages for personal growth, societal change and planetary welfare.
This message was channeled through the medium, Margaret Hunt when she was enjoying a moment of relaxation in her garden and heard a voice calling her from a rosemary bush. It whispered, "come closer!" She bent down and crushed some of the needle-like leaves beneath her fingers and the voice grew stronger, saying: "The wonderful feeling you experience, Margaret, is that of maternal love; it is the emotion bestowed by Gaia, the Great Earth Mother and all the great goddesses that bestow life and growth and nurturing to our planet. She is calling to be heard as I called to you. Do you feel Her body beneath your feet? Can you connect to Her so that you can draw up her vitality for any challenges that lay ahead? She will provide for everyone if She is loved and cared for. Remember my immense powers of survival. I can survive drought and fire, lashing storm and cutting down. Learn of my ability to bestow nourishment and strength to those in need. Like the embrace of my scented leaves, so a kind mother places her arms around a child. Be reassured and comforted by the abundance that our Earth Mother naturally provides as this is her embrace, her gift of love to us. Take time to listen to the words of the tree, the bush and flower at this time of year and to my brother and sister herbs which are specially provided by our loving Earth Mother to delight and to heal. Enjoy the caresses of the dying summer sun on your face and do not forget to give thanks for the warm August breeze as it tousles your hair, for harvest moon soon gives way to the beauty and the sadness of autumn time. My leaves will always be green and I will always provide while my roots remain in the fresh soil. Give thanks for the bounty of Mother Earth of which I am just a part. Please do not forget Her!"

Hestia Retreat

Some ideas are the result of long-term desire and planning. Others seemingly come from nowhere. The concept of a retreat center for women, a place dedicated to providing quiet and time apart from the busy-ness of life, was one of the latter. I had not been trying to change the direction of my work and had never thought about starting a business. I was tired, though, and somewhere in the recesses of my heart, I must have needed this myself. Still, it came as a surprise: the idea of a space where women could come to get away, reflect, and recharge; a sanctuary for the everyday woman who does a lot for others but little for herself.
I buried that idea for about ten years, during which time I moved to Vashon and realized I had moved to the perfect place to create a women's retreat center. Vashon has the beauty, the spirit, the location, and a set of amazing women ideal to run such a place. So I started to talk to others- tentatively- and what is now named Hestia Retreat started to come alive.
At first, it was women talking about the importance of having a space where they could go to recharge - not a spa, but a place where they could rest, if just for a while, and go back to their lives awake and renewed. We talked about what we would want in such a space: small cabins that felt enveloping; trails for meandering; gardens for sitting or working in; perhaps a soaking/bath house. We talked about how important it was for it to be non-profit, how it needed to be based in principles for how to value and treat others and about making it a place of community, creativity, and learning as well as a place for solitude and reflection.
We are a licensed, non-profit corporation in Washington State, our 501(c)(3) paperwork is pending with the IRS. We have an all-woman Circle (Board) of Directors working to plan all aspects of this complex project and have researched related centers to create a business plan for Hestia. Committees are working on design, programming, financial planning, and fundraising/outreach. We have worked with a land use consultant, created a list of seminar leaders who can be part of the education mission we have developed, and have plans for how our space can be sensitive to our environment and accessible to all women. And we have a web presence on Facebook and at www.hestiaretreat.com.
A large group of people-women and men-have donated to Hestia, even at this early stage and this reflects their desire for such a place to exist on Vashon-Maury and also their belief that we are dedicated to bringing it into being. We are looking for someone who wants to endow land or resources to purchase land where Hestia can be built and bring to life a vision.
