Music Lovers Love the Music in Juneau

Juneau summertime free concerts

A trip to Juneau just isn't complete if you don't enjoy a bit of the local music.  After all, if Juneau were a type of music, we'd say it's part funk, part soul, part bluegrass, and a whole lot of classic rock.

A delightful musical tradition continues this summer with free concerts on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons.  Locals and visitors alike tap their feet to a variety of genres, from military bands to rock bands.

"Concerts in the Park" happen each Friday from 7 to 8:30pm at Marine Park downtown.  Settle on the grass or grab a table, then sit back and enjoy the music and the incredible scenery.

The music seems to float on the wind for "Sundays at Savikko," held from 4-5:30 pm at Savikko Park in Douglas, sandwiched between the mountains and Gastineau Channel, just across from downtown Juneau.

For more details and full schedules of performers, check out the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council.

Celebrating Independence Day

July 4th fireworks in downtown Juneau

Juneau, the charming, coastal capital of Alaska, has allowed for the development of unique traditions for celebrating the Fourth of July each year.  And Juneau residents go all out to enjoy every minute.

With over 18 hours of summer daylight to contend with, the holiday fireworks display occurs at 12:01 am on the morning of July 4th (that's the night of the 3rd), the earliest fireworks display in the nation.  Juneau residents crowd both shorelines of Gastineau Channel to watch a spectacular display above the water.  Hearing the blasts echo against the steep, coastal mountains surrounding the downtown area brings to mind the early prospectors whose search for gold was the cornerstone of building of Alaska's capital city.

Best spot for viewing fireworks:  right downtown on the waterfront at Marine Park plaza.

The next morning brings the 4th of July parade in downtown Juneau, where kids on bikes with playing cards in the spokes, pets are dressed in their best, cars and trucks are loud and proud, and marching bands thrill parade-goers every year.  Once the downtown parade concludes, the majority of floats and entrants troop across the Juneau-Douglas bridge to historic Douglas proper to do it all over again, which works quite well for late-night fireworks watchers and those who just didn't get enough of the first parade.

Celebrate with us in Juneau, Alaska - remote and wild, yet every bit an American city patriotically celebrating July 4th with traditions and enthusiasm.

Juneau Airport Celebrates Completion of Renovation

New departure lounge at Juneau International Airport

The Juneau International Airport recently celebrated the completion of an extensive remodeling project.  Newly renovated check-in facilities, security screening area, departure lounge (above), and baggage claim areas feature higher ceilings, more windows, better lights, and additional exits.

The new "down" escalator (shown below) is a welcome additional, making the traverse from the arrival area to the baggage claim area much easier for passengers.
