Greetings!

With more and more people seeking aesthetic treatments from physician-run practices and medical spas, it is important for medical professionals to stay informed on the happenings in the medical aesthetic industry. This month, the big news is the possible FDA approval of a new botulinum-toxin cosmetic drug - Reloxin. If approved, Reloxin could be released in early 2009, giving aesthetic medical professionals another choice to offer their clients. In addition, the International Medical Spa Association announced there are more than 2,500 medical spas, up from 250 in 2004. Having a successful medical spa begins with the basics - developing a sound business plan. This issue will look at the factors involved in building a successful medical spa.

  • Reloxin: A possible new Botulinum-Toxin Cosmetic Product
  • Reloxin is up for review by the FDA signaling that a new botulinum-toxin product may soon be available. Currently, Allergan has 100% market share of the botulinum-toxin cosmetic market with BOTOX. With FDA approval, Medicis will soon join this market with Reloxin, which is already being used in 23 countries.

Medicis is already in the aesthetic market with their hyaluronic acid dermal filler, Restylane. Release of Reloxin would allow for further growth in the aesthetic cosmetic industry. If Reloxin is approved by the FDA, it could possibly be available for use in early 2009. To read more about Reloxin and Medicis, click on the link below.

  • So, you want to open a Med Spa - Where do you begin?
  • Many medical professionals will find the opperations of a med spa compared to a regular physician's pracitce completely different. To have a successful med spa, the business plan is almost as important as the aesthetic procedures themselves. To be successful, the med spa must be built on a firm foundation including the creation of a plan, development of the concept and branding, planning services, hiring a staff, training, developing a marketing strategy as well as promotions and then executing these strategies The link below is to an article featured in Dermatology Times that looks at each of these areas in more detail, and gives an understanding of the business side of the med spa.
