April 2012

Greetings!

Can Do Multiple Sclerosis earns coveted four star rating for fiscal responsibility for fifth consecutive year!

"We are honored to receive this 5th consecutive 4-star designation. Over 80 percent of the dollars we receive are committed to our programs and services," said Heidi A. Heltzel, President and CEO of Can Do MS. "Our rating is a testament of Can Do MS's commitment to fiscal responsibility.  In this economic climate, it's more important than ever for our donors to know their dollars are used efficiently for our mission of empowering people living with multiple sclerosis to transform and improve their quality of life. Charity Navigator's recognition of our accomplishments verifies that we're meeting the high standards we set for our operations." Read more

"I was shocked, very shocked. Though there are challenges MS has brought into my life since that day, I prefer to focus on the blessings."

Reading the stories that inspired each square on the I AM. I CAN. I QUILT. fundraiser, you can't help but feel moved to think of your own Can Do Spirit and the power that comes from people uniting to create a work of art.

The woman behind the quilt, Michelle Keating, returned from the CAN DO Program in May 2007 with a desire to give back.

Exercise...For some that word conjures up negative feelings like a tedious task, a bad movie your spouse makes you watch, or homework. For others, exercise represents "me time", feelings of wellness and accomplishment or taking care of yourself. For those who look at exercise as a negative, let's capitalize on that last description - "taking care of yourself".

Betsy and Don, living with MSJUMPSTART Program
Offered at no charge in communities across the country, they provide participants with an interactive exploration of health, wellness, and lifestyle empowerment approaches and topics.

On Saturday, April 21st Can Do MS will be kicking off our first JUMPSTART Program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin! This JUMPSTART Program, held in collaboration with the National MS Society-Wisconsin Chapter, provides presentations, workshops, and interactive sessions so participants can see themselves beyond the challenges of their MS.

"Traditional medical models for managing chronic disease tend to overlook many important aspects of living with MS, including the emotional, interpersonal, mental, and social health of a patient," said Maureen Martin, Director of Programs, Can Do MS. "We offer a comprehensive, personalized and interdisciplinary approach to enable people to become active co-managers of their health and well-being."
