Ever Thought About Being a Board Member?

Mark your calendars and sign up for the next Board Connection training scheduled for Wednesday, May 11

4:00 - 6:30 p.m.

Presented by the University of Memphis Institute of Philanthropy & Nonprofit Leadership and Volunteer Mid-South, Board Connection prepares participants for service on nonprofit organizations' boards of directors and introduces them to agencies that may benefit from their involvement. Through Board Connection, individuals learn about the nonprofit sector and key topics and trends.

Participants walk away from the session understanding the purpose and leadership responsibilities of board members; the financial practices of nonprofits; and boards' roles in the community as spokespeople and fundraisers. Participants will complete an online survey that identifies issue areas they seek to address through service and have the opportunity to explore nonprofits that have board openings.

If you are interested in participating in the upcoming Board Connection class on May 11, you can register HERE. If your agency is interested in a trained Board Connection volunteer referral to fill one or more board vacancies, please contact us.

Let's Save Service NOW!

The United States Congress is considering legislation to eliminate funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service from the budget, jeopardizing thousands of service initiatives around the country.

With programs like AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve America and Senior Corps at risk, we hope that our agency partners, corporate partners and community volunteers will consider taking ACTION.

Congress is debating this bill now, and they'll be looking to their constituents to see how much -- or how little -- the American people support these cuts. Let's all tell Congress that we cannot afford to lose the critical services these programs provide in our communities.

For some perspective, here's some information of those National Service programs in Tennessee:

 ·          In 2010, over 19,000 National Service participants served in 790 non-profits, schools, public agencies, and faith-based groups across Tennessee.

 ·          These 19,000 gave over 1.1 million hours of service to Tennesseans last year and leveraged an additional 49,700 volunteers.

 ·          Over 50,000 Tennessee citizens received direct benefits from National Service activities such as one-on-one tutoring and mentoring, working with frail seniors and special needs youth, responding to disaster, providing health services, building homes, managing volunteers.
