Summer School ... for many reasons
Students who have failed a course in any grade level should consider using summer school as an opportunity to get back on track.
Students in grade 8 who will be entering grade 9 should consider the prepatory numeracy and literacy course if they experienced any difficulty with grade 8 math or English.
Students who are actively involved in extracurricular activities and who would benefit from a study period during the year should consider summer school reach-ahead courses to be "ahead" when they start school next year.
Please note that summer school courses are filled on a first-come first-served basis. Once the program begins there is no further registration.
Students can pre-register for summer school up until June 20th by visiting the student services office and completing the required application.
For more information please visit the summer school website:

Red Maple Students Attend Celebration at Sacred Heart High School
On Thursday, May 29th, sixteen of our students in grades 7 and 8 attended the Ottawa Catholic School Board's Red Maple celebration held at Sacred Heart High School. Over 110 students from seven other Catholic schools participated in this yearly event. The day consisted of a variety of literacy activities including an icebreaker game involving the titles of previous and current nominated books, a Red Maple trivia competition, book discussions, and a costume judging contest (students had to dress up as a favourite 2008 Red Maple character or in a Red Maple themed costume). Students were also treated to a pizza lunch with cake and each student won a door prize. In the afternoon, the students had the pleasure of meeting internationally recognized poet Oni, the "Haitian Sensation" who wrote Ghettostocracy. She spoke about the importance of believing in oneself. The students enjoyed themselves immensely by participating in slam poetry activities.
Congratulations go out to our Immaculata trivia team of Ashley Kennedy, Nelly Letourneau, Stephanie Siu and Ben Lewis who defended our school title! The team had to answer numerous questions on the 2008 nominated books. Ben Lewis was the last person left standing after 27 other school teams' members were stumped by trivia questions. Bravo, Ben, the rest of the team and our other book club members who quizzed the members in the last 2 weeks!
In the costume judging contest, Maggie Armstrong (grade 7) and Ben Lewis (grade 8), won 1st and 3rd place for their creative outfits of favourite book characters.
The provincial book winner for Red Maple this year was: Safe as Houses by Eric Walters (who visited our school in April). Honourable mentions went to: Darkwing by Kenneth Oppel, Gemini Summer by Iain Lawrence and Endymion Spring by Matthew Skelton. Interesting to note that all of our schools' votes mirrored the province's results (not the case with White Pine).
For more information on all the books in the Red Maple Club Program (which started in 1998) and other reading programs sponsored by the Ontario Library Association, please go to: www.accessola.com, then click on "Reading Programs". |

Chaplain's Corner
We are quickly coming to the end of another school year. For the past two years our Board's spiritual theme has been: Who Is My Neighbour. We have tried to live this theme on all levels: home, school, community, city, province, country and globally. It does not end, rather, hopefully, it deepens.
Our theme for next year will be: "We Care For God's Creation" and it grows out of and deepens Who Is My Neighbour. The new theme is based on justice and the integrity of creation. Justice is rooted in the dignity of each person so we must ask: What do we do to the dignity of others, of creation? As we enter the summer months that, for Canadians, speak of rest, relaxation, warm and sunny weather, the beauty of all that is around us, we can begin to ask ourselves how we can live to ensure that, by our very actions, we bless creation. Have a wonderful summer! Shelley Lawrence, rscj
