" Weeds are flowers once you get to know them."

"I don't need you to remind me of my age. I have a bladder to do that for me."

"May and June. Soft syllables, gentle names for the two best months in the garden year: cool, misty mornings gently burned away with a warming spring sun, followed by breezy afternoons and chilly nights. The discussion of philosophy is over; it's time for work to begin."

Green Valley Aromatherapy

May 2012

Greetings!

Barb - baskets

Hello to all our Aroma friends,

May is a busy month, spring-cleaning for some, getting the camping gear out to air and check over for others. Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May in North America and most places around the world. In Canada, we also have Victoria Day, which is the 21st of May.

For Mother's Day, we thought we would like to hear some stories about your respective Mothers. Instead of sending them to Green Valley, please put them up on our Facebook page so everyone can share. Everyone who posts a story before Mother's Day will receive a coupon for 15% off their next order! I am sure you have some wonderful memories to share about your mothers. It was the 9-9-99 when my Mum passed away. I will not forget the date, and I will certainly not forget her as I catch myself saying things she said, and doing things she did!

The children are all back to school after the spring break. Now is the time to get organized, plan for the summer, and re-affirm your New Year's resolutions that have drifted from your mind. I am going to have a positive outlook on life; I decided this in the New Year. But, after a bout of flu, a bladder infection etc, I was feeling a little sorry for myself with very little interest in anything, nevermind a positive outlook. I have started with my friends and family in England. When they phone or skype I am quick to tell them not to start the conversation with "You will never guess who's died!" Let's talk about the positive things first. For the rest of my positive outlook I am relying on essential oils.

Psychoneuroimmunologists (nice word, eh?) tell us that the body and brain are one and the same. What happens in the brain decides for us if life is worth living or not. Ok, that is a little embellished, but the brain is making decisions all the time, about big things and little things. People are getting the message about exercising the body, but what about exercising the brain? One of our customers appropriately named NOGNZ Brain Fitness, are there to help you with this. Look at what they have to offer on their website: www.nognz.com. It is amazing. They have good information on demetia issues and also suggestions for keeping the brain active, helping with memory, as well as workshops and events for the whole family.

Other ways to help are meditation, Yoga and Tai Chi. If you cannot do any of these than there are councilors who are trained to help. Essential oils work in a different way, going straight to the olefactory cells, helping to balance the emotions, allowing us to feel happiness and joy.

Valerie Ann Worwood's book 'The Fragrant Mind' has a wealth of information about emotional healing with recipes for self esteem, emotional abuse, alcohol addiction, aggression, anger, breakdown, burnout, confusion, depression, fear, hypochondria, rejection, stress management and many others.

In closing, getting outside in the fresh air is the most cost effective method, but getting started is diffucult. Try putting a message on Facebook for a walking buddy. It will give you that extra push out of the door when you really don't want to be bothered.

All the best,

Barb

Essential Oil Profiles

Chocolate Peppermint Essential Oil:

(mentha piperita v. chocolat)

peppermint

Chocolate Peppermint is my favorite chocolate, but I am talking about the essential oil. When you inhale from the bottle you will smell peppermint with just a hint of chocolate. The therapeutic properties are very similar to Peppermint Essential Oil (mentha piperita) but Chocolate Peppermint is a little gentler, making it good to add to hair and skin blends as a stimulant.

Keeping the brain active is very important as we all worry as we are getting older about getting Alzheimer's or some form of dementia. Chocolate Peppermint would be a good oil to diffuse to help with that brain fog we can sometimes experience. An alternative would be to keep tissues with 1 drop of Chocolate Peppermint on them handy in your purse, pocket or in the car to help you to stay alert.

Benchmark Thyme:

Understanding what essential oils can do for you is very important. This is why we brought in 'Aromatherapy vs. MRSA' when we started carrying Benchmark Thyme. Maggie Tisserand developed Benchmark Thyme and wrote the book 'Aromatherapy vs. MRSA'. Seven years of research went into this book in which Maggie Tisserand helps us to understand the extent of the problem with MRSA and how to deal with it effectively. MRSA is a global problem, which led Maggie to explore several essential oils known to have anti-microbial properties powerful enough to kill MRSA.

 Aromatherapy vs MRSA

In the process of researching the book Maggie developed a blend of 4 species of Thyme known as Benchmark Thyme. Benchmark Thyme is the result of many years research and analysis into finding the best combination of Thyme plants. Grown in the UK, and with many remarkable features, Benchmark Thyme is: Antiseptic with antimicrobial powers similar to Tea Tree oil, Skin friendly with a distinctive herbal aroma and Versatile (with uses from toiletry products to wound care).

For the Month of May Benchmark Thyme, Chocolate Peppermint and all of our Hydrosols are on sale for 15% off!!

Recipes

If you are wondering about gifts for Mum, why not make some cosmetics for her? You can make your own cream or buy some base cream from us. Add some essential oils appropriate for Mum and put it in a nice container with a pump. She will use it every day and think of you!

Here is a Recipe that is sure to please:

In a 100ml (3.5 oz) container of cream add 10 drops of essential oil and stir well. Assuming Mum has mature skin, the essential oils to use would be: Bergamot, Chamomile, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lemongrass, Lavender or Palmarosa. You can use just one oil or choose several as long as you keep to the 10 drops. If it does not appear strong enough you can always add another drop, but do not forget that it will be on the face, constantly under the nose!

If you would like to use a ready made blend then Energize, Sunshine and Tranquility are all good choices for mature skin.

Age creeps up on us slilently; the odd gray hair, the wrinkles. What should we do? Where should we start? Essential Oils are the key to a youthful appearance by aiding cellular regeneration. The nutrients and proteins help to maintain the soft sponginess of collagen, on which the outer layers of skin rest, and encourages the regeneration of new cells. Below is a list of essential oils that have the properties to help improve the skin, not just the face but all of the body.

 Fennel

 Neroli

Rose

Lavender

Carrotseed

Patchouli

Frankincense

Lemon

Orange

Rosemary

Geranium

Palmarosa

Lime

Choose any one of these oils or a combination of them. My choice is Fennel for its hormonal type properties, Carrotseed which is best for the skin (it does not smell the greatest but is perfect in a blend), Geranium for its calming and balancing properties, Palmarosa for its hydrating and balancing sebum and Lime for its stimulating properties.

Good night oil Recipe:

To 30mls of Evening Primrose oil add 6 drops of Geranium, 6 drops of Palmarosa, 6 drops of Lime, 3 drops of Fennel and 3 drops of Carrotseed.

Day use Cream Recipe:

To 60mls of Moisturizing Base Cream add 3 drops of Geranium, 3 drops of Palmarosa, 3 drops of Lime, 1 drop of Fennel and 1 drop of Carrotseed.

You can also use 10 drops of the blend in your bath.

Garden Time:

May is the time for spring flowers. April is clean up month for the garden; raking up leaves, picking up branches, and this year we had a few big trees down in the bad winds. It was heavy work and I found muscles that I did not know I had. A soak in the tub with Marjoram and Roman Chamomile helped and I slept very well that night.

Did you know?

When a source of vitamin c (orange, lemon, grapefruit, strawberry, tomato, potato etc) is eaten with meat or cooked dry beans, the body makes better use of the iron in the protein food.
