March 2012

Greetings!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day to all our Aroma people!

I wonder why Saint Patrick is so well known, I know he chased off all the snakes in Ireland, but what about pour old Saint George? He slew the dragons in England. I bet you do not know when Saint George's feast day is. (Answer is at the end of the newsletter).

I went for a little walk this morning, being as the sun was shining. It was wonderful to see all the snowdrops with their little white faces looking at the sun. I hear people saying "It's no fun getting old," but you know, it can be if you let it by having the time to enjoy the snowdrops and all the fascinating things that come with each season. Senior Centres have so much to offer. Regardless of your social skills, physical skills, medical needs or emotional needs, it is an amazing place. In Senior's Centres, social activities are so inexpensive that you can catch up on all the things you did not have the time to do in your younger years. You can go whale watching, on grizzly bear photo tours, trips to see plays, or sign up for inexpensive courses on your favorite subject. The key is to keep active doing the things you love to do!

I came across a very interesting article on the David Suzuki Foundation website about the extra benefits from exercising outside. For example, a 30-minute stroll through the trees decreases blood sugars more than spending 3 hours on a stationary bike. Japanese scientists have researched the relaxing effects of exercising in nature. By breathing in the natural substances, wood essential oils for instance, they can help fight the battle against cancer, support the immune function, and make you feel free and young again. Here is the link to the article:

Do you suffer from sitting disease?

If you find yourself feeling anxious, do not try to hide it, tell the family and take yourself off for a walk in the woods. Offer these negative feelings to Mother Nature and breath in deeply what she has to offer in return.

I am continuing to hold aromatherapy workshops on the second Friday of every month. March will be a workshop about Aromatherapy during pregnancy. In the workshop you will learn how to use essential oils safely during pregnancy. April is the first of the distilling workshops. I am so excited!  Many plants will not have bloomed so I am going to work on the trees I pass while walking. I realize I will not know the botanical names, but it will be fun experimenting with the branches.

All the best,

Essential Oil and Carrier Oil Profiles

Palmarosa essential oil, Premium Base Cream and Avocado Oil are all 15% off for the month of March!

Palmarosa Essential Oil (Cymbopogon martinii):

Palmarosa is one of the essential oils I have on my "good value for money" list.

This wonderful oil has a high proportion of geraniol and an aroma somewhere between Geranium and Rose. In traditional Indian medicine Palmarosa is well known for fighting infectious diseases and is a powerful bactericide. It is particularly active against bacteria responsible for intestinal infections such as gastro-enteritis; tests have shown it will kill E-coli bacteria in 5 minutes

Palmarosa is best known as a skin care oil, stimulating, hydrating and helping to balance sebum production.  It is also good for stimulating cellular regeneration as is Neroli and Lavender. Added to a good base cream, it will enhance the cream by its antiseptic properties, making it good for Acne, Dermatitis and many skin infections. Being a complex oil it does not need to be blended with other oils. Palmarosa is a must for stress related problems and is wonderful in the bath or in a massage.

Premium Base Cream

Premium Base Cream is a silky all over body moisturizer with a smooth-as-satin texture that glides over your skin, leaving it feeling velvety-soft to touch. This cream is made from a wide range of natural butters and carrier oils to moisturize and protect the skin. Try adding your favorite essential oils to it or use it as an unscented body cream.

Avocado Oil (Persea americana)

  avocado

Avocado oil is a thick, penetrating oil that is rich in vitamins A, C, D and E, proteins, beta-carotene, potassium, lecithin and fatty acids. It softens and nourishes dry, dehydrated skin and is easily absorbed. It is said to reduce age spots and heal scars.

Avocado Oil is great for all skin types. This oil has a high "slip" factor. Contains Palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acids. This oil is wonderful for dehydrated skins as it has the ability to penetrate the upper layers of the skin. Avocado oil is very moisturizing and therefore also very helpful for rashes, eczema and aging skin types.

Hand cream blend for embroiderers:

Everybody likes to have nice soft hands. Recently a friend of mine asked me for something to keep her hands soft, as when she is doing delicate embroidery work the rough skin can catch. This is what I made for her:

Night Lotion:

Use this lotion on your hands before bed. Allow 20 mins for it to soak in and then wear cotton gloves to protect your linen.

Put 20 mls of Avocado Oil into a small bowl

Add 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil,

Add 8 drops Geranium Essential Oil and mix together.

Put a generous amount on to your hands and rub together, not forgetting the tips and the nails.

Avocado oil is a thick penetrating oil that is rich in vitamins A,C,D and E, proteins, beta-carotene, potassium, lecithin and fatty acids. It absorbs easily to soften and nourish the skin.  I added to this Geranium essential oil as a balancer and Lavender for its anti inflammatory, calming and balancing properties.

Day cream:

Put 30 mls of Premium Base Cream in a jar

Add 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil

Add 5 drops of Geranium Essential Oil

Stir well with a Popsicle stick or the handle of a spoon

(Do not forget to label it)

If you started with a 60ml jar of cream, you can then use the other 30 mls to make an anti wrinkle cream. Add  5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil,  5 drops of Palmarosa Essential Oil and 3 drops of Geranium Essential Oil. Stir well and use morning and night.

The cream I am suggesting is Premium Base Cream which is made up of a wide range of natural butters and carrier oils to moisturize and protect the skin. This cream easily absorbs into the skin, taking with it the Lavender and Geranium essential Oils.

The difference between cream and lotion is the lotion basically is a let down version of cream, which is OK if you do not have dry skin. If you do, you need a cream that is easily absorbed to work with the deeper layers of skin to get results.

Do not forget these creams and oils are absorbed by the body and picked up by the blood stream, make sure what you use is safe and healthy.

Answer: Saint George's Day is on the 23rd of April. The only reason I remember this is that my Mrs Beatons cookery book on how to make dandelion wine says, "for best results the Dandelions should be picked before 12 noon on St Georges Day."   Happy March everyone!
