June 2011

Greetings!

Barb Greenwood

I hope summer has arrived by the time you are reading this newsletter. We have had an unusually rainy spring here on Vancouver Island, with a couple of days of sun towards the end of May. Despite this, the spring flowers are looking well, even though the Camilla and Forsythiahave died back.

June always seems like a hectic month for everyone, regardless of age, because they are looking forward to summer time and holidays. The children are getting anxious about exams but looking forward to school being out at the end of June, camping season is starting for the families and the retirees are working away at their gardens, so, like the bees, we are all-buzzing. Our photographer friend tells us she is run off her feet with weddings in June. There are several reasons cited for the June wedding tradition: one is that Juno was the goddess of marriage and people married then to honour her. Another theory is that people would take their annual bath in May, so in June they were still relatively "fresh"!

When we are all so busy it is hard to remember to take time for yourself. Self-care is one of the best preventative medicines there is and we all know prevention is better than cure! The time you take for yourself does not need to be long but it should be planned and scheduled into your busy week. Here is something to try:

Go to a quiet place and sit in a comfy chair. Put essential oils into your diffuser (lavender is always a good choice, but experiment with bergamot, chamomile, clary sage, jasmine and rose. Close your eyes and let your mind wander for a few minutes. Take 3 deep, cleansing breaths. Visualize the air going in as clean and natural, and as it goes out it is taking with it all the stress and tension. Working your way up your body from your toes, check in with each part, ensuring everything is relaxed. If you realize you are holding an area tight, give it a little shake and let it go. Pay particular attention to the muscles in your face.

We hope you all have a wonderful month, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Aromatically yours,

Barb

Gout Recipe

Gout. The word seems to make people smileGout and Aromatherapy

because they assume the sufferer has been over indulging in alcohol and rich food. Gout is caused by an over-production of uric acid and the crystals which collect around the joints, quite often the big toes and occasionally the fingers. People who suffer with gout report that the pain is intense. Because gout is a type of arthritis, you can use the essential oils suggested for arthritis, all of which are anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Massage is also recommended, to help move the uric acid through your system.

Try the following recipe:

Equal parts of Basil essential oil, Sweet Birch essential oil and Thyme essential oil

Use the mixture in a daily footbath: add 5 drops of the blend to a basin and soak your feet for 15-20 minutes. If you have a foot spa all the better.

Use the mixture in a massage oil: Add 15-20 drops of the blend to 30mls of Evening Primrose oil. Massage into your feet 2-3 times per week.

Let us know if this works for you, or if you have another essential oil recipe for gout that works!

Industry News

As many of you read in our last email out, there are a number of price changes coming, due to supply problems with a number of essential oil. The usual reasons for supply problems apply here - mostly weather conditions resulting in crop failures, and supply problems usually result in either product shortages, increased prices, or both.

The following products will see price increases in our price list effective June 1st, 2011:

Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oil - there is a shortage of the Radiata type of this essential oil and we are currently unable find a suitable supply.

Jojoba Carrier Oil - this product has recently doubled in price.

Lavender High Alpine Essential Oil - we are currently unable to get any Lavender High Alpine and don't know what the new price will be yet.

Other price increases: aniseed, camphor, clove bud, fennel, geranium, jasmine, palma rosa, patchouli, pine and ylang ylang.

The following essential oils are ones to watch for in the coming months:

Orange Essential Oil

- there continues to be an insufficient supply of orange essential oil, leading to higher prices in the near future.

Lime Essential Oil

- production seems to be lower this year and there may be an increase in price later in 2011.

Lavender Essential Oil

- like last year there will again be a shortage of Lavender due to poor crops.

Peppermint Essential Oil

- predictions are that there will be some pressure on the supply of this well used essential oil.

Other essential oils which will see price changes and possible supply issues in the coming months:black pepper, cinnamon, corn mint, cinnamon leaf, nutmeg
