Greetings!
|

Hi Everyone, This month we are proud to celebrate our 16th year in business! Where does the time go?
A Little History I fondly remember
ordering my first batch of essential oil from England, preparing for my little home-based
clinic where I was offering aromatherapy consultations, treatments and
massage. Although that part of the business did not do as well as I had hoped, a lot of people were asking to buy the
essential oil.
After a while I decided to have a label printed for the bottles I was selling. This meant that I had to
come up with a business name. I combined the first part of my last name (Greenwood) with part of the name of where we live (Comox Valley) and came up with Green Valley Aromatherapy (rather than Comox Wood).
I went into business so
innocently. I had no business plan, no idea what was in store, just a passion for essential
oils and aromatherapy and the knowledge that aromatherapy would one day become part of the daily lives of everyday people.
I had a price list made up for the
57 essential oils I had in stock. Then I had some business cards made up and waited for customers, who had no
idea where to find us. We needed a retail shop or some type of outlet but it turns out that shops can be expensive to set up so we decided to set up a shopping cart website which was fairly novel in those days. This is when I consider the
business to have really started. Tthe day after our website went "live" an order came from Japan! I was so excited!. I was completely unfamiliar with computers so this was
like magic to me. Now I needed an
admin system and this is when Emma joined us as bookkeeper, technical assistant,
web site monitor and so on. It wasn't long before we needed more staff to keep up with
the orders.
Along the winding
road of the last 16 years we have made some huge mistakes, met some incredible
people, gained priceless knowledge and had lots of fun. The funny thing about
the winding road we get on is you can just see ahead but not around the curves
in the road but you can look back at all the good times, some sad, but all
memories. This is why we
called this anniversary "Sweet 16": it's like raising a child, a beloved one who
can be wonderful, a pain in the neck, fun, frustrating, enchanting and
challenging.

| Aromatherapy Recipes
Natural Weed Killer
One of our customers sent us a recipe for a natural weed killer, so we thought we'd pass it on: 1 gallon of white vinegar 1lb of salt 8 drops of dish soap Heat up the vinegar. Add salt and soap. Cool down and pour into your watering can or spray bottle. We've been told it works well, let us know! Deer Deterrent 1 teaspoon of dish soap 1 egg 2 pints of water Whisk up the egg. Add dish soap and lemongrass. Whisk again and add water. Spray the mixture around tree trunks or shrubs you want to protect. The deer hate the smell but it is hardly detectable to humans. |
BugzOff is now D-Bug
| |
As mentioned in previous newsletters, SC Johnson & Son own the trade mark for "Off" and there is concern that our insect repellent, Bugs Off, could cause confusion in the market place.
At their request we are renaming our product and we had a contest to do so. Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions; we appreciate your input. We are pleased to announce that Bugz Off will be
re-introduced with a new name chosen from the suggestions you sent in. It will be called D-Bug. It will still contain the same ingredients: Witch Hazel, Thyme essential oil, Eucalyptus essential oil, Lavender essential oil and Lemon Grass essential oil.
The product with the new name and packaging will begin to be shipped out in late August. Until then the product will continue to be sent out under the name BugzOff.

Monty, the polydactyl kitten
|
We thought some of you might like an update on Monty.
Monty, our
polydactyl kitten, is now 9 months old and is spending lots of time outside,
just coming home for a cuddle when all is quiet.
Two weeks ago Monty
brought home his first mouse at 2 am and proceeded to play with it very noisily in
the bedroom. In my sleepy state I chased Monty out of the bedroom and while looking for
something to pick up the mouse with, Silky, our 17 year old Siamese cat, came to see what
all the racket was about. When Silky spotted the mouse the look on his face was as
if the pizza man had delivered supper! He pounced on it and ate it while I was
chasing him out of the door. Poor Monty never got to enjoy his catch.
