April 2012
April has been a busy month for CCAM. We hosted visits by potential industry partners, were recognized as a finalist for the Community Catalyst Award at RichTech's Annual Awards Gala, and will be awarded a Manufacturing Leadership Award next week. As the building goes up (photos below) we can begin to visualize exactly where the equipment and researchers will be. Heading into summer, look for new faces on the staff including our first intern! We are currently seeking Directors of Economic and Workforce Development and a Project Team Lead in Manufacturing Systems in support of our research agenda (see right for details). Please stay tuned for more monthly updates from CCAM!

Game Changer: Research center in Prince George is a collaboration between academia and industry

Put an ice cube into a roaring furnace. Now, keep the ice cube cold. That's not a riddle. It is the kind of challenge that researchers at the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) in Prince George County - heralded as a paradigm for industry-academic collaboration in Virginia - soon will be trying to address. But there will be much more at stake than ice cubes. "Fundamentally, this is about jobs. It's about keeping jobs in America," Peter Diakun, vice president and chief technology officer of Newport News Shipbuilding, says in a video interview for CCAM. more at VirginiaBusiness.com
