e-nnunciator for December 04, 2011
Second Sunday of Advent
|
Dear (Contact First Name),
Tomorrow, Saturday 3, 2011 at 11am, we will remember the life of Cam Davis. Cam was a dear friend to us all. I remember a couple of years ago, Cam commented to me that he felt ministers focused too much on Christ's salvation delivering people after death. He felt more focused should be given on how salvation brings resurrection and new life while we are on earth. He was right because he was a living example of this point. Cam found redemption at 50 - of which he was quite vocal and open. Salvation brought him peace, love, and closeness to God now - a closeness that, this week, has transcended death.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, 20th-Century Christian martyr, wrote, "Why are we so afraid when we think about death?... Death is only dreadful for those who live in dread and fear of it. Death is not wild and terrible, if only we can be still and hold fast to God's Word. Death is not bitter, if we have not become bitter ourselves... How do we know that dying is so dreadful? Who knows whether, in our human fear and anguish we are only shivering and shuddering at the most glorious, heavenly, blessed event in the world? Death is hell and night and cold, if it is not transformed by faith. But that is just what is so marvelous, that we can transform death."
Let us remember tomorrow that more than twenty years ago, Cam transformed death. He beat it through the aid of his Savior. The final lines of a poem written by my grandfather, Dempsey Nettles, sum it up nicely "Do not stand around and cry; I only changed, I did not die!" Hope to see you tomorrow at 11am as we celebrate a great life that blessed so many people.
Your's in Christ,
Duane
PS. If you can not join us tomorrow, please stop and remember Cam in your morning prayers. Thank God for the gift of having known him.

Upcoming Ordinations around the diocese
As previously announced by Bishop Thompson, we have three evening ordinations to the priesthood coming up soon, each beginning at 6:30pm:
12/6 - - Harry Jenkins, Christ Church, Slidell
12/8 - - Patrick Edwards, St. Margaret's, Baton Rouge
12/13 - - Cal Lane, St. Mary's, Franklin
In order to make it easier for folks to attend we have arranged for four buses to transport those who do not want to drive on their own:
Depart St. Luke's Baton Rouge at 4pm on 12/6 for Christ Church, Slidell
Depart St. Augustine's Metairie at 4:30pm on 12/8 for St. Margaret's, BR
Depart St. Luke's Baton Rouge at 4pm on 12/13 for St. Mary's, Franklin
Depart St. Augustine's Metairie at 4pm on 12/13 for St. Mary's, Franklin
The cost of these buses is being offset in part by donations from a handful of parish clergy and the bishop, so we are only asking for a $10 donation per rider for those who wish to ride along (at over $3 per gallon of gas in your own car, this is quite a deal!) We will ask for cash or check (payable to the Diocese of Louisiana) at the time the buses load.
Each bus can carry 50 persons.
Please encourage clergy and laity alike to attend these ordinations. Reservations for the buses must be made by sending an email tobuses@edola.org, indicating the names of the folks and the buses they want to take.
Also, don't forget the (transitional) deacon ordination of Alina Williams and Joe Wallace on Saturday, 12/17 at the Cathedral, beginning at 10am.
For see Fr. John for more information.
